Water Tender Operations

• Overview: Tender operations are used to supply water for incidents far from water sources where relay pumping is impractical.
• Operational Modes:
  • Nurse Operation:
    • Used to deliver water for direct attack and tank filling at low GPM and short durations.
    • Rule of Thumb: < 250 GPM and < 10 minutes of operation.
    • Subsequent tenders should connect to a pump intake, not the nurse tender's direct fill.
  • Progressive Tender Supply:
    • Utilizes a driveway supply lay with a siamese appliance.
    • Tenders connect to the supply line with a siamese and pump the line.
    • Recommended for larger GPM deliveries.
    • Rule of Thumb: > 250 GPM and > 10 minutes of operation.

Supporting Water Tenders

• Water Supply Officer:
  • Should have a separate Tactical Communications Channel.
• Traffic Control:
  • Traffic plans for shuttle operations should be established.
• Water Source Identification:
  • Water sources should be identified while enroute.
  • A source engine should be provided at the water supply if possible.
• Cold Weather Considerations:
  • In cold weather, a sanding truck and/or tow truck should be staged for possible water tender issues.

Water Tender Flow Rate Calculation

• Formula: Tanker Flow Rate = Tanker Water Tank Size (in Gallons) - 10% / Travel Time + Handling Time
