THE FLIPPED INSTRUCTION APPROACH BY: DR NORHAYATI MOHD YUSOF FLIPPED CLASSROOM DEFINITION Is a type of “Blended Learning” Students are introduced to content at home and practice working through it at school The reverse way of learning Face-to-face interaction is mixed with independent study usually via technology FLIPPED CLASSROOM WHAT STUDENTS DO AT HOME Watch an online lecture Review inline course material Read physical or digital text Participate in an online discussion Perform research FLIPPED CLASSROOM WHAT STUDENTS DO AT SCHOOL Skill practice (guided or unguided by teacher) in-person, face-to-face discussion with peers Debate Presentations Lab experiments Peer assessment and review This doubles student access to teachers- once with the videos at home, and again in the classroom FLIPPED CLASSROOM 4 PILLARS OF F-L-I-P CLASSROOM 4 PILLARS OF F-L-I-P CLASSROOM WHY YOU SHOULD FLIP YOUR CLASSROOM Flipping: Flipping: Speaks the language of today’s students Allows for real differentiation Helps busy students Changes classroom management Helps struggling students Changes the way we talk to parents Helps students of all abilities to excel Educate parents Allows students to pause and rewind their teacher Makes your class transparent Increases student-teacher interaction A great technique for absent teachers Allows teachers to know their students better Can lead to the flipped mastery program Increase student-student interaction HOW TO IMPLEMENT A FLIPPED CLASSROOM PLAN Figure out which lesson in particular you want to flip Outline the key learning outcomes and lesson plan HOW TO IMPLEMENT A FLIPPED CLASSROOM RECORD Make a video, instead of teaching this lesson in- person Make sure it contains all the key elements you would mention in the classroom Don’t make a video just for the sake of making a video, but you do it because you feel these are necessary and appropriate to deliver the knowledge If making videos better facilitate your instructional goal, then proceed HOW TO IMPLEMENT A FLIPPED CLASSROOM SHARE Share the video to your students Make it engaging and clear Explain that the video’s content will be fully discussed in class and they have to prepare questions if any HOW TO IMPLEMENT A FLIPPED CLASSROOM CHANGE Now your students have viewed your lesson, they are prepared to go in-depth than ever before GROUP An effective way t discuss the topic is to separate into groups and students are given task to perform Eg: write a poem, role play, produce a video etc REGROUP Get the class back together to share the individual group’s work with everyone. Ask questions, dive deeper than ever before After 6 steps : review, revise & repeat HOW TO IMPLEMENT A FLIPPED CLASSROOM OTHER STRATEGIES Active Learning : allow students to apply concepts in class where they can ask peers or instructors for feedback or clarification Peer Instruction: students can teach each other by explaining concepts or working on small problems Collaborative learning: CL could increase student engagement, enhance student understanding, and promote collective intelligence Problem Based Learning: class time can be spent working on problems that can last for the duration of a semester Discussions or Debate: give students the opportunity to articulate their thoughts on the spot and to develop their arguments in support of their opinions or claims FITTING WITH THE REVISED BLOOM’S TAXONOMY In traditional learning: lower level of learning such as remembering & understanding is happening in class, and work on activities that involve higher level of learning outside of classroom In Flipped classroom model, learning is flipped. : students can finish the lower level of cognitive work BEFORE CLASS. When they come to class, they can engage in higher cognitive levels of learning with peers and teacher present
