**[Chondromalacia patellae]** ----------------------------------------- ### **[Anatomy]** - Affects **articular cartilage** on underside of **patella** (covers bone when they move against each other) - Primarily affects the patellofemoral joint (**patella and distal femur)** ### **[Mechanisms]** - Breakdown and softening of articular cartilage on patella underside / posterior surface - this covers the bones when moving against each other, limiting **smooth bone movement.** - It deteriates due to the **thighbone getting rubbed** against by **articular cartilage** - **Non-functioning vastus medialis** (knee is pulled up and outwards causing friction) - Muscle imbalances cause **irritation of cartilage surface**. ### **[Predisposing factors]** - Age (up to **young adults**) - rapid bone growth - Gender (**female**) - - **High** impact on knees -- more knee stress - **Previous knee injury -** - **Muscle imbalances around the knee -- vastus medialis stabilises the knee** ### **[Rehab / Treatment]** - **Rest / limited aggravation** - **Ibuprofen / naproxen for pain** - **Ice -- lower swelling** - **Knee brace -- stability** - **Physical therapy -- muscle strengthening** - **Realignment surgery -- reduce pressure**
