VITAL STATISTICS  Refers to the data gathered from the systematic study of vital events such as births, deaths, illnesses, marriages, divorces, separations, adoptions and annulment patterns  Statistics of diseases and deaths indicate the state of health of the community and the success or failure of health work  Births and deaths are registered in the Office of the Civil Registrar of the municipality  Health statistics are collected by the DOH through its regional, provincial and municipal agencies  Statistics on population and its characteristics can be obtained from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)  Registration of births and deaths and correction of errors in name, dates, etc. are done in the Office of the Local Civil Registrar of the Municipality or city USES OF VITAL STATISTICS  Used as indicator of the health status for a group or a whole community  Statistics of death and disease indicate the state of the health of a community and how successful or unsuccessful are its health services REGISTRY OF VITAL EVENTS  Certificate of Live Births - Signed by the birth attendant, midwife, nurse, doctor or even student nurse - Must be filed within 30 days  Death Certificates - Signed by a physician only - Must be filed within 48 hours from the occurrence of death - Still birth is under death certificate - Abortion – depends on the parent’s decision RATES & RATIOS  Rate - Shows the relationship between a vital event and those persons exposed to the occurrence of such event  Ratio - Used to describe the relationship between two numerical quantities or measures of events without taking particular considerations to the time or place  Crude or General Rates - Refers to the total living population  Specific Rate - For a specific population or group - Limits the occurrence of the event to the portion of the population definitely exposed to it PRESENTATION OF DATA  Observations of events in the community are presented in the form of tables, charts and graphs  Most commonly used graphs:  Line or curve graphs  Bar graphs  Area diagrams (Pie Chart) FUNCTIONS OF THE NURSE IN VITAL STATISTICS  Collects data  Tabulates data  Analyzes and interprets data  Evaluates data  Recommends redirection and/or strengthening of specific areas of health programs as needed
