Words are SYMBOLS (representations) --and-- Words have WEIGHT abstract- Words are not tangible or concrete. They are representations. These representations influence our perceptions, and at the same time, our perceptions influence the words (representations) we choose. arbitrary- No natural connection between the symbol and what it represents— At any point in time, the symbol and what it represents can change. ambiguous- Because of unique, individual experiences, words have a range of meaning on which most members of a culture agree. Remember, what words “mean” can vary. (bypassing) *work on using specific language *Make this generic language more specific: I want us to be closer. I want more freedom. What are some problems with this statement? You’re so disrespectful. -static evaluation: an assessment that suggests that something is unchanging or fixed -I vs You language Instead of “You’re so disrespectful,” say, “I feel disrespected when you…” -totalizing: when we respond to people as if one part of their identity is all we see in them Language and culture reflect each other: -The words and phrases that are commonly used in a culture can reveal things such as cultural values (ex. Statements referring to time as a commodity in American culture; referring to a parent as “____’s mom” rather than referring to them by name in Korean culture; introducing oneself last name first, first name last in Japanese culture) Language reflects and shapes perceptions: -The words we use can reveal feelings and influence the way we perceive people, places, relationships situations, etc. (ex. the attention given to labeling and describing things such as food dishes in restaurants, language used by satisfied vs unsatisfied couples, “political speak,” labels for different groups of people - preferred as well as offensive) Language allows for abstract and hypothetical thought: -Language allows us to hold onto and reflect on abstract ideas such as freedom, integrity, and equality. It also allows us to conceptualize things that don’t currently exist such as the past and the future. Our ability to do this also gives us the chance to grow as individuals and as a society. PROFANITY Darkside: -considered offensive to many people -often attached to negative emotions such as anger/rage -linked to verbal aggression and often used to verbally abuse -can increase feelings of distress during conflict (because of its perceived harshness) LIGHTSIDE: -used by young people to assert independence (because it’s considered “adult” language) -bonds people -releases tension -emphasize strong feelings -can increase pain tolerance
