What would you teach your patient about each of the prototype drugs? - Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) -- combo of 3 live viruses - CI: pregnancy, immunodeficiency, allergy to gelatin or neomycin (used to be eggs) - Ed: thrombocytopenia, 97% effective, fever of 103 is normal - Diptheria and Tetanus Toxoids and Acellular Pertussis Vaccine (**DTaP**) - CI: fever \>105/severe illness, encephalopathy - Ed: reduced risk of disease by 80-90% after 3^rd^ dose, boosters (Td) q 10 years, AE: shock-like state or encephalopathy - Poliovirus Vaccine, inactivated (IPV)/ IPOL - CI: allergy to streptomycin or bacitracin (monitor), no serious AE - Ed: antibodies develop after 2^nd^ dose in 97% kids - Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine - CI: just local AE - Ed: 2 types; can be made with tetanus toxoid (i.e., hiberix) or outer membrane protein (OMP), those with OMP are faster/stronger; protection begins after 1 week of 1^st^ dose of PEDVAXHIB or COMVAXA - Varicella Virus Vaccine - CI: kids should avoid aspirin (ASA) for 6 weeks (risk for developing REYE syndrome) - Hepatitis A Vaccine (HepA) - CI: none - Ed: all children 12-23 months (1-2 yrs), men who have sex with men, adopting children from hep A areas, efficacy after 2^nd^ dose - Hepatitis **B** Vaccine (HepB) - CI: anaphylaxis, **baker's yeast** - Ed: children -- recombivax, adults -- engerix, not live, lasts 5-7 years, protection after 3^rd^ dose - Pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13) - CI: n/a - Ed: all children \5 years (can be live or not) - Meningococcal Vaccine - CI: n/a - Ed: 11-12 years + booster @ 16; must for people living in groups such as dorms, military - Rotavirus Vaccine (Rotarix, Rotateq) - CI: uncorrected malformation of the GI tract + immunocompromised - Ed: 8 weeks in infants, live, PO - Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV) -- Gardasil - CI: n/a - Ed: prevents cancers and genital warts in ppl 9-45 yrs
