Driving facts: most collisions happen when someone wasn’t aware of the changes in traffic around them. Speeding is a factor in nearly 40% of all traffic fatalities in Washington. Failure to yield right of way is the number one citation in city collisions The risk of injuring a child crossing the road is increased during the loading and unloading of a school bus The single biggest contributor to collisions is failing to see what is happening. Over 30% of all the crashes that take place in the United States each year occur at intersections Speed limit: 20 mph in school zones. Beach - 25 mph 25 mph on streets of cities and towns. 50 mph on county roads. 60 mph on state highways. No parking zone: within 30 feet of a traffic signal, stop sign, or yield sign. within 20 feet of a pedestrian safety zone. within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. within 50 feet of a railroad crossing. more than 12 inches from the curb. within 20 feet of a fire station driveway on the same side of the street or within 75 feet of the fire station driveway on the other side of the street. within 5 feet of a driveway, alley, private road, or area of the curb removed or lowered for access to the sidewalk Parking on a hill: with a curb and are facing uphill - away from the curb. Down hill - to the right/curb Up hill - away from the curb no curb - toward the edge of the road. Yield: Drivers turning left must yield to oncoming vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Drivers entering a roundabout must yield to drivers and bicyclists already in the circle At an intersection where there is no stop sign, yield sign, or traffic signal, drivers must yield to vehicles in the intersection and to those coming from the right. At a four-way stop the driver reaching the intersection first, goes first (after coming to a complete stop). If more than one vehicle arrives at the same time, the vehicle on the right goes first. Roundabouts - always drive around the circle to the right, speeds of 15-20 mph. Light: vehicle’s headlights must be turned on from a half hour after sunset until a half hour before sunrise dim your high beams whenever you come within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle use your low beams when following 300 feet or less behind another vehicle use the low beams in fog or when it is snowing or raining hard. If you are driving a slow moving vehicle on a two-lane road where it is unsafe to pass, and five or more vehicles are in a line behind you, you must pull over and stop when safe to let them pass. Rule of thumb Before you turn left or right across oncoming traffic, turn on your signal at least 100 feet ahead and look for a safe gap in the traffic.
