Using the bible : To use the Bible,you need to look for the book then look for the chapters which are the big blue numbers next to the paragraphs then look for the verses which are the senderces. There are little numbers next to sentences. The importance of reading the Bible: 1. helps transform your thinking 2. Trains you to hear God's voice 3. Gods' word is your instruction manual for life. 4. "sow good seeds into your heart" 5. Transform into who we are designed to be Literary genres found in the Bible: Main types of literary genres are: Narrative- 43% (history, parable, Biography) роetry -33% (songs, wisdom, prophets) discourse - 24% (Laws, wisdom, Letters from the disciples) Anachronisms: - anachronisms are a thing that belongs to - or appropriate to- a time period other than the period in which it exists. -For example" everything in the small town was as it would have appeared in centuries past, apart from one anachronism: A bright yellow construction crane. Major parts of the Bible: The Bible is divided into 2 major parts 1. The old testament- written Before desus -composed of 46 books - The old testament scriptures were the ones Jesus was taught from when growing up - They were also the ones that all of the apostles and writers from the New Testament knew and believed - Our christian faith story, rooted in all these scripture - We can trace our roots back about 4000 years. 1. New Testament: written after Jesus →composed of 27 books - The New Testament is the story of Jesus as he reveals God's love for us through his life, death and scripture - It is also the story of the early followers of Jesus and how the Holy Spirit formed into the people of God —the Church How the Bible was written: stages of the Gospels There are different stages of how the Bible was written - Oral- stories of past events were transferred from one generation to the next by word of mouth through stories, poems and songs - written - Once written language was developed, oral traditions were recorded. - Edited- As stories were re-read and re-told over the years, they were often edited to help readers understand the context in which events happened. Authors of the Bible & How it was written - Many different people under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit contributed to the Bibles' consents - This is known as divine Inspiration - There are many literary forms and books found in the Bible that were all written at different times, for different audiences, in different languages and in different places. The 4 Evangelists - The 4 Evangelists are Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John - An evangelists is someone who seeks to convert someone to a religion - Each of the 4 Gospels is seeking to evangelize different audiences (Gentiles, Jews, Samaritans, etc). with different social status' (rich|poor, educated /uneducated) Matthew: - centers on Jesus' human nature and the life of Christ, beginning with christs genealogy - Matthew portraits Jesus as a teaching savior - winged man Mark: The winged Lion - The non is considered a royal animal and this gospel centers around the royal dignity of christ. - Mark's gospel depicts Jesus as a suffering servant - the lion was accepted in early times as a symbol of resurrection. Luke: The sacrificial ox - This Gospel centers around atonement and seeking redemption. - The ox is an animal that was sacrificed (among Jesus, redemption) as Jesus too, was sacrificed for humanity - Luke's Gospel depicts jesus as a savior for all John : The Ascending eagle - This Gospel centers around the eagle and Jesus' divine nature through the concept of ascension - John's Gospel depicts Jesus as a divine savior The synoptic Gospels: - The Gospels are our primary source about Jesus - The first three gospels of the Bible Matthew, Mark and Luke are all very similar. -These gospels are each referred to as the ´synoptic’ which means to see together. - John's Gospel is very different He has stories that aren’t found in the synoptic gospels - Differences between the synoptic gospels are: - time of writing - Audience - purpose Literal vs. contextual reading: Eisegesis - the interpretation of a text of the Bible by reading into it one's own Exegesis - an explanation or critical interpretation of a text
