Even though he was older than Jesus, John recognized Christ’s deity when he said Jesus was superior because He existed prior to himself. In fact, many circumstances in Jewish culture required the use of ritual baths. Preparation for priests to be ordained or to enter the Holy of Holies included using “mikvah.” Mikvah was also used for regular ritual cleansing and for purification from the defilement of touching a dead body or cleansing from leprosy. They were familiar with the sacrificial system God ordained in the Law for the blood of animals to atone for sin. The Lamb Who Was Slain: Revelation 5:1–12 When God delivered His people out of Egypt, He instructed each household to slay a lamb with no blemishes and apply its blood to the lintels and doorposts. The Lord spared the life of the family’s firstborn child when He saw the blood and passed over their house. The Passover lamb was a type of Christ, who came as the Lamb of God (John 1:36). type • According to Easton’s Bible Dictionary Definition (only last sentence): The word “type” is generally used to denote a resemblance between something present and something future, which is called the “antitype.” Jesus came into the world as one who never sinned. Unit 2, Lesson 5 • Jesus, the Lamb of God 27 History and Geography: Footprints of John the Baptist John the Baptist, whom Jesus said was the greatest man born to a woman, led an unusual life. His parents, Priest Zechariah and wife Elizabeth, lived in the hills of Judea about five miles southwest of Jerusalem. They had been an aged, childless couple. An angel unexpectedly appeared to Zechariah and announced that Elizabeth would have a son who was to be named John. When Zechariah responded in disbelief, the angel made him speechless until John’s birth (Luke 1:20). About six months later, in Nazareth of Galilee, an angel visited Mary, Elizabeth’s cousin. He told her she would be the mother of God’s Son, whom she would call “Jesus” (Luke 1:26–31). Mary traveled from her home to visit Elizabeth, and when Elizabeth heard Mary’s voice, she was filled with the Holy Spirit and John leaped in her womb (Luke 1:39–41). According to Luke 3:23, Jesus was about thirty years old when John the Baptist baptized Him near Bethany/Bethabara east of the Jordan River (John 1:28). Therefore, John was also about thirty years old. “Thirty years became among the Jews the perfect age at which a man attained to full maturity.”2 John, attired in skins and eating locusts and wild honey, went into the wilderness of Judea, a rugged strip of land west of the Dead Sea. There he preached a message of repentance (Matt. 3:1–6) and baptized people. Using information in the article above, complete the map work. 1.
