Drugs for Muscle Spasms NUR242/BSL 101 Skeletal Muscle Relaxants Cyclobenzaprine Action Relieves muscle spasms by acting on the central nervous system Uses Short-term treatment of muscle spasms (usually less than 3 weeks) Skeletal Muscle Relaxants - Cyclobenzaprine Side effects/Adverse reactions Anticholinergic effects (dry eyes and mouth) Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, confusion Allergic reaction Skeletal Muscle Relaxants - Cyclobenzaprine Contraindications Heart disease Diabetes Glaucoma Caution Seizure disorders CNS depression Skeletal Muscle Relaxants - Cyclobenzaprine Interactions Other CNS depressants Alcohol Antidepressants Kava kava OK to take with food or milk Skeletal Muscle Relaxants - Cyclobenzaprine Assessment Vital signs Medical/medication history Reason client is taking medication Skeletal Muscle Relaxants - Cyclobenzaprine Nursing interventions Monitor vital signs Monitor for CNS side effects Provide for safety Monitor muscle spasms Skeletal Muscle Relaxants - Cyclobenzaprine Teach Do not stop abruptly. Must wean off medication to prevent rebound spasms Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants Not to drive while taking medication Drug is used for acute spasms and should not be taken for more than 3 weeks Inform HCP if pregnant or nursing Evaluation Evaluate client’s muscular pain for decreased or complete relief of pain.
