Unit 3 Types of Emergencies Lesson 2 Medical Emergencies Lesson Goal You will be able to respond to a medical emergency. Think About This You notice that an inmate is sweating and has shortness of breath. Would you consider this a medi- cal emergency? How would you respond? Medical Emergency ✅ CO832.1. Know what a medical emergency is and how to recognize signs and symptoms A medical emergency is when a person experiences medical or psychological distress, a severe illness, or an injury. Signs and symptoms of a medical emergency may be unusual or excessive bleeding, pain, medical distress (for example, sweating, nausea, shortness of breath, paralysis), or loss of or altered consciousness. If the inmate uses medical devices (for example, intravenous lines or monitors), this equipment may become dislodged. Equipment ✅ CO832.2. Know the medical resources available when responding to a medical emergency Each emergency is unique; assess the situation to determine the proper equipment to use. Refer to first-aid or other training to correctly use medical equipment and supplies during a medical emer- gency. Resources used to address a medical emergency include staff, on-site medical personnel, or outside emergency medical services (EMS). ✅ CO832.3. Know the equipment needed when responding to a medical emergency Equipment available during a medical emergency may include PPE (e.g. gloves, masks), an auto- mated external defibrillator (AED), and a first-aid kit. Medical equipment must be used according to training and agency policy. Observe universal precautions to avoid contact with a person’s body fluids. Treat every person as if they are infected to minimize risk of infection when providing aid. Chapter 8 Responding to Incidents and Emergencies / 263 Standard Procedures ✅ CO832.4. Know how to follow standard procedures to resolve a medical emergency To resolve a medical emergency, follow these standard procedures: 1. Identify the severity of the medical emergency to determine the level of response. If the inmate is conscious, ask, “Are you declaring a medical emergency?” 2. Make sure that the area is secure and safe. Enforce crowd control by removing all inmates and uninvolved personnel from the area. 3. Notify medical staff and supervisors—inform staff of the number of affected persons, their location, and the nature of the emergency. 4. Administer aid using PPE to observe universal precautions. Provide assistance only within the scope of your training. a. Administer first aid as appropriate until medical help arrives. b. Protect inmates against self-inflicted injury or death; if an inmate has attempted hanging, call for assistance as the situation dictates. Proceed according to agency policies whether the inmate is injured or deceased. c. Wait for assistance as necessary. 5. Transport to a medical facility or, if applicable, designate staging areas for outside agencies. 264 / Florida Basic Recruit Training Program (CO): Volume 1
