Performance Standards The learner proficiently delivers an argumentative speech emphasizing how to resolve conflicts among individuals or groups. ESSENTIAL CONCEPTS AND TERMINOLOGIES: 1.Exposition persuades a reader or listener by presenting one side of an argument. 2. Argument is expressing a point of view on a subject and supporting it with evidence. 3. Assertion is a stylistic approach or technique involving a strong declaration, a forceful or confident and positive statement regarding a belief or a fact ESSENTIAL CONCEPTS AND TERMINOLOGIES: 4. Impromptu speech is given with little or no preparation, yet almost always with some advance knowledge on the topic. 5. Extemporaneous speech is the presentation of a carefully planned and rehearsed speech, spoken in a conversational manner using brief notes. 6. LESSON 2 Language and Literature ENGLISH 10 Technical Definition and Operational Definition Technical Definition ❖The term defined is used only for specific fields and profession ❖The definition is comprehensive description of the term, process or phenomenon. Technical definition has three types: (1) Parenthetical Definition (2) Sentence Definition (3) Extended Definition. Parenthetical definition provides a synonym or a description in a phrase or clause form of the word which is enclosed in a parenthesis or separated by a comma. Extended definition presents details of the difficult to understand word in a paragraph. It begins in sentence definition then expounds the word by providing additional sentences. Types of Extended Definition 1. Etymology – explaining origin of the word itself 2. History – if relevant, discussing the history of the term/its use/controversies associated with it 3. Cause and Effect – discussing how the situation came about and what effects it may have 4. Description – listing and defining the component parts 5. Principles of Operation – discussing how topic in question functions, including any special materials or conditions required Types of Extended Definition 6. Classification - showing how the topic fits into a larger category 7. Contrast/Negation – showing how the topic differs from others in the same class 8. Comparison – showing how the topic is similar to others in the class 9. Analogy – explaining by comparing two dissimilar topics, where the second is familiar to the audience 10. Examples 11.
