It is the process of stimulating people to actions to accomplish the goals. People’s behaviour can be stimulated by desire for • Money • Success • Recognition • Job satisfaction • Team work TYPES OF MOTIVATION Positive sustainable motivation Negative motivation away from something Intrinsic You wants to do it Extrinsic someone wants you to do it Positive motivation towards a goal POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE INFORMATION Positive Motivation Based on fear Negative Motivation Based on fear or force Incentives are offered Punishment is given Accompanied by a feeling of happiness Accompanied by a feeling of frustration and anger Fear acts as a push mechanism Cooperation of employees TYPES OF MOTIVATION Intrinsic Motivation: the motivation that comes from within the individual Extrinsic Motivation: comes from doing things or factors outside the individual MASLOW’S NEED HIERARCHY THEORY Physiological Needs – need for food, clothing, shelter etc Safety Needs - needs to be free from physical danger and the fear of loss of job, property, shelter etc Social Needs - need to have meaningful relationships with others Esteem or Ego Needs - concerned with self-respect, self-confidence, feeling of being unique, recognition etc. Self-actualization Needs - need to maximize one’s potential
