Understanding Plants GRADE 4, UNIT 6, LE1 Objectives 1. Identify the basic needs of plants and their main parts. 2. Explain how plants reproduce using flowers, cones, seeds, and fruits. 3. Describe how plants adapt and respond to their environment. 4. Understand key terms like adaptation, transpiration, stimulus, response, and tropism. What do plants need to survive? ► Discuss in your groups ► How many things can you think of? What do plants need to survive? ► Sunlight ► Water ► Air ► Nutrients ► Space What are the parts of a plant? Roots ► Absorb water and nutrients. ► Anchor the plant in the soil. Stem ► The stem supports the plant ► Transports water and nutrients to the leaves ► Two types: soft stems and woody stems Leaves ► Leaves come in many shapes and sizes. ► Air goes in and out of the leaves and it is where plants make their food (called photosynthesis) ► Transpiration is when water evaporates from the leaves ► This helps the plant pull up water through the stem like a straw Transpiration Flowers ► Help plants reproduce ► Attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. ► Flowers can have male and female parts How do plants reproduce? ► Flowers produce seeds and fruits ► Fruits protect and help disperse seeds. ► Seeds contain an embryo surrounded by a food supply for the baby plant ► Cones are used by some plants, which spread pollen. Life Cycle of a plant Notebook Activity: Label the parts of the plant ► Use the words: Stem, Flower Roots, Leaves, Seed ► Then, write the function of each part behind the flap and draw a picture How do plants survive? PART 2 Stimulus, Response, and Tropism ► Adaptations are special features that help plants survive (e.g., cactus spines, deep roots). ► Plants respond to their environment. Stimulus: Something in the environment (e.g., light, gravity). Response: How the plant reacts (e.g., bending toward light). Tropism: Growth in response to a stimulus Can you guess the tropisms? ► Hydrotropism ► Gravitropism ► Phototropism ► Thigmotropism Can you guess the tropisms? What did we learn? ► Plants need sunlight, water, air, nutrients, and space to survive. ► Roots, stems, leaves, and flowers each have important jobs to help plants grow and reproduce. ► Plants adapt to their environment and respond to stimuli like light and gravity. ► Key terms like adaptation, transpiration, and tropism help us understand how plants live and grow.
