SOCIAL INEQUALITY SOCIAL INEQUALITY is the existence of unequal opportunities and rewards for different social positions or statuses within a group or society. Two approaches exist to explain why poverty exists. One explanation is to blame the poor; the other is to blame society. Social Inequality According to Neckerrman and Torche, 2007, Social Inequality is one of the dimensions of stratification that concerns the gap between the rich and the poor. Different Forms of Social Inequality: Gender Inequality Economic Inequality Class Stratification Health Inequality Different Forms of Social Inequality: Gender Inequality –acknowledges that men and women are not equal and that gender affects an individual’s living experience. These differences arise from distinctions in biology, psychology, and cultural norms. Different Forms of Social Inequality: Economic Inequality – generally refers to the disparity of wealth or income between different groups or within a society. Different Forms of Social Inequality: Class Stratification – is a form of social stratification in which a society is separated into parties whose member have different access to natural resources and power. An economic, religious, interest and ideal rift usually exist between different classes. Different Forms of Social Inequality: Health Inequality – are unfair and avoidable differences in health across the population and between different groups within the society. Health inequality arise because of the condition in which we are born, grow, live, work, economic status, and age. Factors that contribute to Social Inequality between Individuals and group of People: 1. Educational Attainment 2. Wealth 3. Poverty 4. Occupation 5. Power SOCIAL INEQUALITIES SOCIAL INEQUALITIES 2. Ethnic minorities are also subject to social discrimination – the cultural marginalization that they experience from the dominant majority. They are also victims of stereotyping, abuse and, SOCIAL INEQUALITIES 3. Persons with disabilities (PWD) or differently-abled persons - are also victims of inequality and deprived of opportunities in society especially, in the employment sector due to their physical impairments. SOCIAL INEQUALITIES 4. Discrimination and prejudice. Discrimination happens when minorities are being deprived of equal treatment and are kept in a lower status by the dominant members of the society and the resistance of equality. Prejudice is defined as a negative attitude toward the members of a group. It is a prejudgment of others that allows us to brand or label them in various negative ways. Discrimination is an act while prejudice is an attitude. SOCIAL INEQUALITIES 5. Stereotyping refers to our tendency to picture all members of a category as having the same qualities. Usually, stereotyping is a result of overgeneralization. SOCIAL INEQUALITIES 6. Ethnocentrism is the belief that our nation, race, or group is the best or superior to others. SOCIAL INEQUALITIES 7. Scapegoating is a situation when people encounter problems that they do not know how to solve. Often, they feel frustrated, and eventually, it leads to aggression. When it happens, people usually look at someone or something else to be blamed for their troubles or problems. SOCIAL INEQUALITIES 8. Racism is the belief that one’s race is superior and has the right to control or direct others. GLOBAL INEQUALITY Global inequality refers to inequality between people across the countries in the world. It refers to the unequal distribution of resources among individuals and groups based on their position in the social hierarchy (a series of ordered groupings of people or things within a system.
