UNDERSTANDING CULTURE, SOCIETY AND POLITICS Most Essential Learning Competency Discuss the nature, goals and perspectives in anthropology, sociology and political science. Human Cultural Variation Refers to the differences in social behaviors that have different cultures exhibit around the world. What may be considered good etiquette in one culture may be considered bad etiquette to other. Cultural Variation refers to the differences in social behaviors that different cultures exhibit around the world. Examples: 1.Religion 3. Nationality 2.Ethnicity 4. Race Religion - Human beings’ relation to that which they regard as holy, sacred, absolute, spiritual, divine, or worthy of special reverence. Ethnicity -Simply means a shared cultural heritage. -“large groups of people classed according to common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin or background.” Why is she trying Why is he bowing? to shake my hand? ethnicity Nationality The state or fact of being a citizen of a particular nation. Race - is usually associated with biology and linked with physical characteristics such as skin color or hair texture. Social Differences The differences among the individuals on the basis of social characteristics and qualities. Example of Social Differences 1.Gender 2.Socio- Economic Status 3.Exceptionality Gender Either of the two sexes (male and female), especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones. Socio- Economic Status Status is the social standing or class of an individual or group. It is often measured as a combination of education, income and occupation. - Upper class - Middle class - Lower class Exceptionality It refers to the state of being intellectually gifted and/or having physically or mentally challenged conditions. Some examples of Exceptionality: ❖Developmental delay ❖Gifted and talented ❖Hearing loss ❖Medical condition ❖Mental illness/Mental Health ❖Neuro-developmental and related disorders ❖Intellectual Disability ❖Specific Learning Disorder ❖Physical Disability ❖Speech and /or Language Disorder Social Change In sociology, the alteration of mechanisms within the social structure is characterized by changes in cultural symbols, rules of behaviors, social organizations, or value systems. Social Change Example: 1.Women will perceive their partners much less involved in household chores and only focus on household chores traditionally considered masculine. Men will perceive their female partners more involved in traditionally female household chores, especially in those traditionally considered feminine. Political Identities Refers to the set of attitudes and practices that an individual adheres to in relation to the political systems and actors within his or her society.
