# LO1 - Concepts of equality, diversity and rights, and how these are applied in the context of health, social care and child care environments ## Equality * **Equal treatment**: Means nobody should experience discrimination based on who they are. Everyone has equal opportunity to make the most of their lives. Individuals are respected, treated fairly, and given the same opportunities regardless of differences and needs. Examples include adapted activities for everyone, access for everyone, use of non-discriminatory language, and equal opportunities policies. ## Diversity * **Respect and value differences**: Respect people's differences and promote inclusion, allowing everyone to contribute. Examples include offering choice and variety of activities. ## Discrimination * **Treating someone differently**: Treating someone differently because of their protected characteristics. *Indirect discrimination* occurs when policies or practices disadvantage certain groups. Example: a GP surgery requiring proof of address when registering, but Travellers may have less ability to provide such proof. ## Rights * **Legal entitlements**: Human rights and freedoms that are legal entitlements to protect everyone. These include protection from harm and abuse. ## Protected Characteristics * **9 characteristics**: There are nine characteristics - Race, Gender/gender reassignment, Religion, Marriage and civil partnership, Maternity and pregnancy, Sex, Disability, Age, and Sexual orientation. ## Empowerment * **Enabling and supporting**: Care workers enabling and supporting individuals to be in control of their lives. ## Independence * **Not relying on others**: Not relying on others, and having the freedom to make your own decisions. ## Inclusion * **Equal opportunities**: Ways of working that provide individuals with equal opportunities to be involved and feel they belong. ## Respect * **Regarding feelings, wishes, and rights**: Showing regard for the feelings, wishes, or rights of others. ## Dignity * **Promoting self-respect**: Care that promotes and does not undermine a person's self-respect. ## Diversity Table | Category | Description | |---|---| | Race | | | Religion | | | Cultural differences | | | Music | | | Food | | | Dress | | | Gender and gender reassignment | | | Marriage and civil partnership | | | Family structure | | | Age | | | Sexuality and sexual orientation | | | Language | | | Social class | | | Appearance, language, diet, clothes, education | Worship time, diet, clothing, language | | | Diet, early family, language, music, clothing | | | Culture, class, age, race | | | Education, religion, race, culture, diet | | | Religion, jobs, finance | | | Labelling, pay gap, new marriages | | | Tax (better if married), divorces, cohabitation, | | | Single parents, education, social class, adoption | | | Elderly, care, jobs, laws | | | Used to be a crime, | | | Job, religion, education | | | Education, arts/entertainment |
