Would employees be better motivated when they are paid more? Would workplace diversity enhance team performance? Are leaders born or made? These are questions you may be asked as managers, and there are few, if any, simple and universal principles that explain organizational behavior (contingency variables). Viola YJ Yin 20 If you haven’t thought about these questions You are likely to just follow your intuition or other’s orders. And it’s easy to just follow your intuition or other’s orders. Viola YJ Yin 21 Course style Usually starts with a debate/discussion on a topic question or an exercise Debates: There is no right or wrong answer. Questions: vague on purpose Exercise: quiz about the last course Lectures will follow the debate/discussion or exercise Your participation in debates/discussions and exercises is very important. Read the assigned chapters before attending the lecture and participate actively in class discussions and exercises. For debates and discussions, you will write a note on your answer to the question or your position in the debate and at least two rationales for it to turn in at the end of the NEXT class. Slides will be provided before classes Viola YJ Yin 22 Course outline Viola YJ Yin 23 Grouping (by Sep 23rd) 8 groups will be needed for debates Start recruiting members today 6 – 7 members I may ask your group to merge with another group or to admit additional members to your group Read the debate topics and decide which side your group will support (see Appendix B: Group Project) Act quickly: first come, first served (eligibility: 6 ppl group).
