To infinitive and beyond! 1. Find the word “to.” 2. Look beyond the word “to.” If it’s a verb, you have an infinitive. If it isn’t, you have a prepositional phrase. 3. Look beyond the infinitive. Include any modifiers of the infinitive as part of the infinitive phrase. Buy a ring at Gerund. (because a ring is a thing that ends in –ing). 1. Find the word that ends in –ing. 2. Is it normally a noun, but is doing the job of a noun? In other words, is it the subject, predicate nominative, or direct object of the sentence? 3. If yes, you have found a gerund.
