The Male and Female Reproductive System General Zoology Lecture Objectives At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to: identify the parts and functions of the male and female reproductive system; and describe ways on how to care for the system. Reproduction the process by which plants and animals produce more of their kind for the continued existence of the species Reproductive System a collection of organs and a network of hormone production that work together to create life FUNCTIONS OF THE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM Produce the eggs necessary for reproduction, called the ova (ovum is singular for one egg) or oocytes Incubate and nourish a fertilized egg until it is fully developed Produce female sex hormones that maintain the reproductive cycle Parts of the Female Reproductive System OVARIES two small, oval-shaped glands located on either side of the uterus home to the female sex cells, called eggs (ova) produce hormones that control menstrual cycle and pregnancy Source: Source: fertilized egg to make its way down to the uterus Source: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/body/22999-ovaries Parts of the Female Reproductive System UTERUS a hollow, pear-shaped organ located in a woman’s lower abdomen, between the bladder and the rectum called the “womb” and holds the fetus during pregnancy each month, the uterus develops a lining (the endometrium) that is rich in nutrients which provides nourishment for a developing fetus Source: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/body/22999-ovaries Source: https://www.pregnancybirthbaby.org.au/about-the-placenta Parts of the Female Reproductive System CERVIX called the neck or entrance to the womb the lower, narrow part of the uterus, located between the bladder and rectum forms a canal that opens to the vagina lets menstrual blood out and semen into the uterus Source: https://venuscup.com/cervix/ Parts of the Female Reproductive System VAGINA also known as the birth canal, joins the cervix (the lower part of uterus) to the outside of the body Source: https://www.columbiadoctors.org/health-library/multimedia/vagina/ Parts of the Female Reproductive System VULVA the external portion of the female genital organs Source: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/body/vulva FUNCTIONS OF THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTME Produces, maintains and transports sperm (the male reproductive cells) and protective fluid (semen) Discharges sperm within the female reproductive tract during sex Produces and secretes male sex hormones responsible for maintaining the male reproductive system Parts of the Male Reproductive System PENIS made up of two parts, the shaft and the head the urethral opening at the tip of the penis delivers sperm into the vagina during sexual intercourse Source: https://lomalindafertility.com/pregnancy/reproductive-system/ Parts of the Male Reproductive System SCROTUM the sac-like organ hanging behind and below the penis contains the testicles (also called testes), as well as many nerves and blood vessels Source: https://teachmeanatomy.info/pelvis/the-male-reproductive-system/scrotum/ Parts of the Male Reproductive System TESTICLES (TESTES) oval organs that lie in the scrotum the primary male reproductive organ responsible for testosterone and sperm production Source: https://www.hormones-australia.org.au/the-endocrine-system/testes/ Parts of the Male Reproductive System EPIDIDYMIS narrow, tightly-coiled tube that is attached to each of the testicles (the male sex glands that produce sperm) where the sperm cells (male reproductive cells) finish maturing and are stored Source: https://teachmeanatomy.info/pelvis/the-male-reproductive-system/testes-epididymis/ Parts of the Male Reproductive System DUCTUS (VAS) DEFERENS a long, muscular tube that travels from the epididymis into the pelvic cavity, just behind the bladder transports mature sperm to the urethra, the tube that carries urine or sperm outside of the body, in preparation for ejaculation Source: https://maleinfertility.org/understanding-male-infertility/anatomy-physi ology-male-reproduction/vas-deferens-ejaculatory-ducts-1 Parts of the Male Reproductive System EJACULATORY DUCTS formed by the fusion of the vas deferens and the seminal vesicles empty into the urethra Source: https://maleinfertility.org/understanding-male-infertility/anatomy-physi ology-male-reproduction/vas-deferens-ejaculatory-ducts-1 Parts of the Male Reproductive System URETHRA the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside of the body additional function: ejaculating semen when the man reaches sexual climax when the penis is erect during sex, the flow of urine is blocked from the urethra, allowing only semen to be ejaculated at climax Source: https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/male-reproductive-system Parts of the Male Reproductive System Other Glands seminal vesicle produces fructose that provides energy to the sperm as they seek an egg prostate gland also produces a fluid that helps the sperm move more quickly through the female reproductive system bulbourethral, or sometimes Cowper’s glands, makes a fluid for protecting the sperm on its way through the urethra Source: https://www.nagwa.com/en/explainers/157128784649/ How do take care of the reproductive system?
