## The Japanese Wife - **Author:** Kunal Basu - **Quote:** "It's an improbable and hauntingly beautiful love story, almost surreal in its innocence. And I immediately knew that this was the film I had to make." - Aparna Sen **The Story** Snehamoy Chakrabarti, a teacher at Shonai's secondary school, receives a letter from his penpal, Miyage, in Japan. They begin exchanging letters and their correspondence blossoms into love, leading them to a pen wedding. Years later, Miyage arrives in Shonai, a widow with a young son. As their relationship deepens, Snehamoy receives a letter from Miyage, who is sick and will be leaving to live with her brother's family. Snehamoy heads to Calcutta to visit Miyage, but upon arrival, receives a final letter from her informing him of her death. Snehamoy is devastated by Miyage's passing. While coping with his grief, his aunt brings a widow to live with them. Snehamoy learns that the widow is actually his aunt's sister. His aunt plans to use her son's thread ceremony as an excuse for Snehamoy to go to Canning with the widow and see if there's any possibility of them reuniting. The journey to Canning reveals a complicated emotional dynamic between Snehamoy, the widow and the son. The story culminates with the widow arriving in Shonai after the news of Snehamoy's untimely death and is met with open arms by the villagers who knew him well, including his aunt. She is welcomed as the 'Japanese wife' by the villagers, as a testament to her love for him.
