Notes ===== The Heart is a muscular organ that continually CONTRACTS and RELAXES that order to pump blood around the body. The heart is composed of CARDIAC MUSCLE. The heart is composed of four (4) chambers: - The UPPER chambers are called the ATRIUM - The LOWER chambers are called the VENTRICLES The RIGHT side of the heart receives DEOXYGENATED blood from the Vena CAVAE. The LEFT side of the heart pumps. OXYGENATED blood via the -- AORTA to the rest of the body -- CAROTID ARTERY to the head. Since the blood flows through the heart TWICE in one circulation humans are said to have a DOUBLE CIRCULATION. Here deoxygenated blood is taken to the LUNGS via the PULMONARY ARTERY where it picks up OXYGEN and 15 transported back to the heart via the PULMONARY VEIN The LEFT ATRIUM therefore receives Oxygenated blood while the LEFT VENTRICLE pumps the Oxygenated blood to the AORTA The LEFT VENTRICLE is the most muscular chamber of the heart since it pumps the blood to the rest of the body.
