THE CONCEPT ORIGINATES FROM GEOGRAPHY AND URBAN STUDIES, BASED ON THE THESIS THAT GLOBALIZATION HAS CREATED A HIERARCHY OF STRATEGIC GEOGRAPHIC LOCATIONS WITH VARYING DEGREES OF INFLUENCE OVER FINANCE, TRADE, AND CULTURE WORLDWIDE. ECONOMIC DOMINANCE Global cities have a large population, a significant financial sector, and a high degree of urban development. COMMAND AND CONTROL Global cities organize the flow of capital, labor, commodities, information, and raw materials. They are key locations for finance 3. Production and innovation Global cities are sites of production and innovation in leading industries. 4. Cultural influence Global cities are centers for culture, media, and tourism, and are home to world-renowned cultural institutions. 5. Transportation infrastructure Global cities have a well-developed and internationally linked transportation infrastructure. 6.
