**WORKSHEET- HISTORY OF THE USA:** **1607 (Colonists land at Jamestown)** 1. Jamestown Colony was the **first permanent English** settlement in **North America** located near today's Williamsburg, Virginia. 2. During 1606 "Virginia" was the English name for the entire **eastern coast** of North America. 3. In late December **1606** approximately 100 colonists departed England in three ships -- **Susan Constant, the Godspeed** and the **Discovery** under the command of **Christopher Newport.** 4. \- **Capt. John Smith,** was a mercenary who had fought in the **Netherlands** and **Hungary** 5. The colonists and local tribes conducted **business** with each other. The English trading **metal tools** and other goods for the Native Americans **food supplies** 6. **Christopher Newport took** five colonists including Smith and some sailors with him on an expedition to explore **the rivers flowing into the Chesapeake** and to look for a way to the **Pacific Ocean** 7. Newport was English **seaman and explorer, captain** of the Susan Constant. The **commander** of three ships which carried settlers for the Virginia Company in 1607 on the way finding the settlement at **James River,Jamestown in Virginia.** 8. The first mass casualties of the colony took place in **August 1607** The reason was the combination of **bad** water from the river and disease bearing a flying insect -- **mosquitoes** and limited amount of **food rations** This created a wave of **dysentery** - an infection of the bowels that causes severe diarrhoea with loss of blood, severe **fever** and many other serious health problems. 9.
