Disposing products in a way that significantly reduce harm to the environment would be considered Environmentally Friendly The Textile Industry. Most clothes in our wardrobe contain natural and synthetic (cheap easy to care fibers). Their manufacture creates pollution They are hard to recycle E.g. Nylon takes 30 to 40 years to decompose. The pesticides that farmers use to protect textiles as they grow can harm wildlife, contaminate other products and get into the food we eat. The chemicals that are used to bleach and colour textiles can damage the environment and peoples health. Old clothes that we throw away take up precious space in landfill sites, which is filling up rapidly. Most of the textile machineries cause noise, sound and air pollution. Over-usage of natural resources like plants, water, etc depletes or disturbs ecological balance. The working conditions in the textile and clothing industry are of sub- standard. Exploitation of animals often goes hand in hand with intensive farming practices that damage the environment as a whole. What is a Green Product? Manufacture of products which take into account The Environment (Conservation of energy, waste minimization) Health of Consumers (non hazardous products, use of insecticides, chemicals for finishes, cleaning solvents: are all hazardous) Working conditions of people in the fashion/textile industry. (Fair Trade) Eco Friendly textiles are made using organic raw materials, such as cotton grown without pesticides and silk made by worms fed on organic trees don't involve the use of harmful chemicals and bleaches to colour fabrics are often made from recycled and reused textiles. High-quality garments can be made from second-hand clothes and even recycled plastic bottles are made to last, so that people keep them for longer come from fair trade - the people who make them are paid a fair price and have decent working conditions. With the eco-fashion industry still in its infancy, the main responsibility at the moment lies with clothes manufacturers and fashion designers, who need to start using sustainable materials and processes. Eco Friendly fibers organic cotton,(free from chlorine bleach, syn. Dyes,no pesticide, herbicide or insecticide during growing cycle. Sally Fox: Fox fiber, coloured cotton) Organic silk, Organic wool, soy silk, (by products from tofu making process. Protein extruded into fiber) Milk-silk,(genetic material from spiders introduced into goats eggs (fertilized) creating milk that has silk fibers, used by u.s military also used for biodegradable sutures, bullet proof material and research being done to create artificial ligaments) Pine apple fabrics, Hemp, Peat, Fortrel eco-spun tm,(recycled polyester fleece , from plastic soda bottles) Ingeo tm corn fibre, bamboo, Recycled fabrics from recycled fibre. Care of Fabrics Phosphate free and environmentally friendly detergents Avoid washing in hot water Cold water detergents reduce energy bills (Tide-Cold water) Sunshine instead of bleach Lemon juice and sunshine for stubborn stains Eucalyptus oil excellent grease stain remover Tea Tree Oil for times when you want to disinfect the laundry and cannot use hot water, tea tree oil has antiseptic, antibacterial, germicidal, and fungicidal properties. Rubbing Alcohol - good for grass stains Hydrogen Peroxide - since this is hard on the fabric fibers, only use this method in a pinch and for fresh stubborn stains like blood. Baking Soda Is Eco-Fashion Sustainable? Eco- Clothes/Textiles made from organic raw fibers that are free from pesticides. This is beneficial to the environment, animals and people’s health. Eco-Clothes can be made from recycled textiles or plastics. This saves on waste, land fill space, and amount of raw material used.
