SUSTAINABLE SOURCING I. Definition of Sourcing function in clothing industry ▪ 2 Types of sourcing ▪ Players of these 2 sourcings II. Definition of Environmental Responsibility applied to clothing industry ▪ Concept of Responsability, Concept of Environment ▪ A tool for assessing the environmental impact of a textile product ▪ International, European and National Environmental regulations ▪ Voluntary initiatives to promote Environmental Responsibility III. Environmental assessment of textiles and Textile industry ▪ Quick reminder of the steps of textile industry and different categories of textile fibers ▪ Environnemental assessment of textile fibers ▪ Environnemental assessment of each steps of textile industry ▪ Environnemental assessment of textile recycling IV. Undertake or support a sustainable sourcing process ▪ Standards to select an eco-responsible supplier ▪ Standards to select an eco-responsible manufacturer Bénédicte Trivière - 2024/25 1.I. DEFINITION OF SOURCING FUNCTION IN CLOTHING INDUSTRY TWO KINDS OF SOURCING TO DESIGN A GARMENT FABRIC (& TRIMS) SOURCING MANUFACTURER SOURCING A team of sourcers/developpers A team of Product Managers specialize in fabrics, trims, prints, specialised by clothing category and embroideries, etc… As textile working in pairs with the designer of experts they know how to find the the same clothing category.. As product suppliers who meet their textile experts they know how to select the requirements. manufacturers who suit their product specifications. Bénédicte Trivière - 2024/25 2.I. DEFINITION OF SOURCING FUNCTION IN CLOTHING INDUSTRY RECAP OF SOURCING FUNCTION ▪ The Fabric sourcing team provides fabrics ▪ The team of Product Managers provides and trims suitable for the products, the identity manufacturers whose knowhow, quality and the positionning of the brand and in line standards and production terms are suitable for with the production requirements and textile the products, sales forecast and positionning of regulations. the brand. Bénédicte Trivière - 2024/25 3.II. DEFINITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY APPLIED TO CLOTHING INDUSTRY CONCEPT OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSABILITY Bear the consequences of our choices and actions of consumption, production, transport and social interaction on the air, land, water, natural resources, flora, fauna and human beings. This awareness enables us to modify our choices and actions in a SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT approach, i.e. a development ❑ economically efficient ❑ socially fair ❑ environmentally sustainable ❑ that meets the needs of the present while enabling future generations to meet their own needs Bénédicte Trivière - 2024/25 4.II. DEFINITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY APPLIED TO CLOTHING INDUSTRY CONCEPT OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSABILITY APPLIED TO TEXTILE SOURCING ❑ Choose sustainable textile supply chains that help to preserve natural resources and offer fair and equitable living conditions, while being economically profitable for the brand and its suppliers ❑ Develop a collaborative approach with suppliers and manufacturers to motivate them to supply sustainable materials and to use sustainable manufacturing processes. ❑ Make supply chains transparent and traceable for the customers , to enable them to make informed purchasing decision Bénédicte Trivière - 2024/25 5.II. DEFINITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY APPLIED TO CLOTHING INDUSTRY A TOOL FOR ASSESSING THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF A TEXTILE PRODUCT LCA : LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT LCA is a « tool » to assess the impact of a product on the environment at every stage of its life. This method divides the life cycle of a product into 3 stages 1) Birth : this stage goes from the design of the product, then its industrial production until its distribution (including all the stages concerning the raw materials necessary to its production) 1) Life : this stage corresponds the consumption or use of the product, taking into account any care that may be required during the its use 1) Death : this stage corresponds to the disposal of the product whatever the kind of this disposal (destruction or recycling) Bénédicte Trivière - 2023/24 6.II. DEFINITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY APPLIED TO CLOTHING INDUSTRY Product Life Cycle can be either linear or circular Today our usual economic model operates on a linear cycle based on the « extract - produce-consume-dispose » system known as « Design Cradle to Grave » this model leads to the depletion of natural resources and environmental pollution. In a Sustainable approach the aim would be to operate on a circular cycle based a « reuse - produce-consume-reintegrate waste» system known as « Design Cradle to Cradle » This model would preserve natural resources and could minimize environmental pollution.
