If there is a call, there must be a caller and someone who is called. There must also be a response. THE TEACHING PROFESSION EDUC 55 Teaching as a Mission Mission - comes from the Latin word missio – which means to send. - “task assigned” “You are sent to accomplish an assigned task.” THE TEACHING PROFESSION EDUC 55 Teaching as a Profession Profession - rooted in profess – which means someone claims to have the status and purpose. - requires special training and that brings a high status Professional - shows great skills and high standards THE TEACHING PROFESSION EDUC 55 Elements of a Profession 1. Graduate of a 4 or 5-year degree in a college or university baccalaureate degree THE TEACHING PROFESSION EDUC 55 Elements of a Profession 2. Initial Professional Education 3. Licensure Examination (mandatory) 4. Code of Ethics (grouped) - each profession has a code of ethics which states what professionals should do and ensures that its practitioners behave responsibly.
