Pedagog of Englis Uni - 3 Approache of teachin Englis SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR Lesso pla SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY A LESSON PLAN? A lesson plan is the instructor’s road map of what students need to learn and how it will be done effectively during the class time. Before you plan your lesson, you will first need to identify the learning objectives for the class meeting. Then, you can design appropriate learning activities and develop strategies to obtain feedback on student learning. A successful lesson plan addresses and integrates these three key components: Objectives for student learning Teaching/learning activities Strategies to check student understanding SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR Lesson plans are guides A lesson plan is more or less like an outline that gives an overview of a proposed lesson. Lesson plan From inception to conclusion the lesson plan gives the teacher a guided tour of how to approach a lesson and what activities should be done at each interval. SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR In short, it is a step-by-step process by which a teacher can ensure that his or her students are learning, all that is necessary on the proposed topic. For example, let's say (for the sake of illustration) that you have prepared a lesson plan on the topic of ‘Optics’ related to Classical Physics. In effect, your lesson plan should guide students on a proposed idea or theory relative to ‘Optics’. SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR Once again, for the sake of example, let's say that you want to convey the notion that in the topic of ‘Optics’ the basic property of light is demonstrated. If you have this thought in mind and know that you want to convey it as a lesson then you will prepare an outline to better illustrate your lesson. This outline is the lesson plan. SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR Definitions A lesson plan is actually a plan of action. – Lester B Stands Lesson plan is the outline of the important points of a lesson arranged in the order in which they are to be presented to students by the teacher. – C.V.Good A lesson reflects & clarifies the teacher about ‘why to teach’ (objectives), ‘what to teach’ (content), & ‘how to teach’ (methods & learning experiences), & ‘how to evaluate’ (evaluation procedure). All these are the essentials of teaching & learning. SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR Approaches to Lesson Planning ❖ Generally various approaches are used to make a lesson plan. These approaches are Herbartian approach, Unit approach, Evaluation approach, and Project approach. ❖ Herbartian Approach is based on apperceptive mass theory of learning. SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR DESIGNING A LESSON – PLAN There are certain essentials which must be observed before drawing up lesson-plans. ❖ The teacher must have mastery of and adequate training in the subject matter and activities from which the topic has been selected for a certain lesson. ❖ The teacher ought to possess knowledge of children from direct contact with them and from a study of child psychology. SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR ❖ He / she must have a deep understanding of the principles of learning so that he/she can plan the learning activities on these principles. Awareness of the various principles and techniques of teaching is essential for successful lesson plan. ❖ Awareness of individual differences in the class is another useful pre-requisite. It is essential in planning to know as accurately as possible that knowledge of the topic, the pupils already possess. Preparation or introduction 2. Presentation 3. Comparison or Association 4. Generalisation 5. Application 6. Recapitulation SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR Preparation The teacher must prepare the minds of students to receive new knowledge. This knowledge is to be linked with the previous knowledge of the students. Preparation means the exploration of the pupil’s knowledge which leads to the aim of the lesson. Teacher’s skill lies in creating the interest, the children seem to have in the particular subject. Introduction and motivation is involved and nothing new is taught here. Memory level: Thoughtless teaching 2. Understanding level: Thoughtful teaching 3. Reflective level: Upper thoughtful level SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR Memory level It is the memory level of teaching in which the teaching is done to provide textbook knowledge to students and the emphasis is more given to memorization rather than learning. It is not said to be the best level of teaching as memorizing anything is not good and importance should be given to understanding the concept. Well, this level helps in increasing the memory power. Advantages of Memory Level: It is beneficial for young students Useful for slow learners Helpful to children for learning a new concept The basis for understanding the reflective level of teaching SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR Disadvantages of Memory Level: Not beneficial for higher classes Dominance of teacher Loss of recall and retention Interaction level is low in the classroom The problem of classroom management Students don’t get a chance of self-learning SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR Understanding Level Understanding level teaching is a more deliberate teaching method in which students interact with concepts and, as the name implies, comprehend the content. They evaluate the concepts and bring together the facts and other notions associated with them based on the students’ prior awareness and comprehension level. Teachers and students are also equally interested in this phase, and in this teaching stage, teachers use debates, seminars, explanations, and other similar methods. The classroom atmosphere is welcoming and stimulating. SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR Advantages of Understanding Level: Effective learning Development of different cognition learnings Sets stages for entering into the reflective level of teaching The interaction level is good Disadvantages of Understanding Level: Ignore higher cognitive abilities Less emphasis on intrinsic motivation No individual learning Teacher centred SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR Reflective level The introspective level of teaching is also known as the reflective level. This is the most advanced level of the teaching-learning method. This is because teaching does not end until the students have grasped the idea. It goes beyond comprehension and requires students to focus on what they have heard or understood. This is a more advanced stage in which the learner advances one step further through the concept to comprehend the concept’s multiple dimensions. This is the level of instruction in which the instructor encourages and stimulates students to think about and reflect on the content and concepts they have learned. SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR Advantages of Reflective Disadvantages of Reflective Level: Level: Not suitable for lower classes Thoughtful mode of Time-consuming process operation Not suitable for Indian Learner-centred classroom Development of Not applicable for dull students problem-solving skill The burden on the teachers Maximum flexibility These were the three levels of Development of creativity teaching as you can conclude Self-motivation Reflective level of teaching is the most beneficial. A unit is made up of numerous lessons and requires more time—say, a semester. As a result, organizing a unit takes more time than organizing a lesson. Usually, the department head or section head is in charge of this. However, there will be instructor discussion involved. Unit plans comprise what will be taught, how, for what purpose, and for how long. They are purposeful, clear, and well-paced plans including aligned teaching approaches and active learning strategies. SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR The benefit of planning is two fold. First, it helps you create a high-quality plan that guides instruction, but also helps students understand what will be covered, why it will be covered, and how they will practice the knowledge, concepts and skills to meet the unit’s objectives, and in turn, the course learning outcomes. Second, it ensures an aligned plan for instruction and learning that is inclusive of your students’ learning needs. Having an organized plan helps you consider all the course design elements you need to integrate for your students to have successful learning experiences. Planning helps you increase the likelihood of your students obtaining the course learning outcomes. SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR LESSON PLAN WRITING Decide what lesson you want to convey. What topic do you want to teach and why would your students benefit from it?... Develop objectives so that your lesson plan conveys the exact lesson or activity that you want it to convey.... Be clear on the materials that you may need.... Write your procedures. SEM-1/PC-3/APPROACHES OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE/SUNDAR What is the key difference between Unit plan and Lesson plan? A lesson plan elaborates, basically, on objectives of a particular lesson and how teaching is planned in a way to achieve those objectives. A Unit plan, on the other hand, covers a wider area; a unit that can include many lessons and takes a longer time period.
