By the end of this tutorial you should be able to: 1. Define the students-centered learning (SCL); 2. Understand the strategies, advantages and disadvantages of SCL; 3. Differentiate between the SCL and teacher-centered learning Lets first discuss the Teacher-centered learning in brief to have a better understanding of the SCL  In teacher-centered learning — the more traditional or conventional approach to teaching — the teacher functions in the familiar role of classroom lecturer, presenting information to the students, who are expected to passively receive the knowledge being presented.  But there’s a different and potentially more successful alternative ——— the  The teacher practices full control of the classroom and learning activities.  Being fully in control minimizes an teacher’s concern that students may be missing key materials.  Teachers feel comfortable, confident and in charge of the classroom activities.  Students always know where to focus their attention  This method works best when the teacher can make the lesson interesting; if not, students may get bored, and they may miss key information.  Students work alone, missing potential opportunities to share the process of discovery with their peers.  Collaboration, an essential and valuable skill is discouraged.  Students may have less opportunity to develop their communication and critical thinking skills. SCL is defined as “an instructional approach in which students influence the contents, activities, materials, and pace of learning”. (‫)نهج تعليمي‬ ( Collins & O’ Brien, 2003) In SCL, the lecturer is still the classroom authority figure. However, they function as more of a facilitator while students have a more active and collaborative role (‫ )دور نشط وتعاوني‬in their own learning. 1) The student has full responsibility, autonomy and accountability (‫ )المسؤولية الكاملة واالستقاللية‬for her/his learning. 2) Active involvement and participation are the heart for learning on part of the student, where the role of teacher is that of a mere facilitator/resource person. 3) It provides a platform for an active rather than passive learning. where students must construct their knowledge through inquiry, communication, critical thinking and problem solving  Project Work & Community Programs.  Problem Based learning activities & Case studies  Simulations and role plays  Participation in virtual communities  Exposure to information & communication technologies  Field work By using self-paced and/or cooperative (team based) learning After what has been discussed so far, can you discuss with your team about the advantages and disadvantages of SCL? 1) Education becomes a more shared experience between the lecturer and the students, and between the students themselves. 2) Students build both collaboration and communication skills. 3) Students tend to be more interested in learning when they can interact with one another and participate actively in their own education. 4) Students learn to both work independently and to interact with others as part of the learning process. 5) Increased student’s motivation to learn, greater retention of knowledge, deeper understanding and a more positive attitude towards the subject being taught 6) Waste in human and educational resources is reduced 1) With students free to interact, the classroom space can feel noisy or disordered. 2) Classroom management can become more of an issue for the lecturer, possibly cutting into instructional activities. 3) With less focus on lectures, there can be a concern that some students may miss important information. 4) Though teamwork is considered beneficial, this approach may not feel ideal for students who prefer to work alone. 5) Some students may have difficulty focusing or retaining information in a collaborative, interactive setting.  Active and Authentic Learning & Assessment  Teacher- As a Facilitator  Collaborative & Integrated Learning  Meta cognition  Role of Technology Write brief definitions (1-2 lines) of the five principles of SCL & submitted to the virtual dashboard (by next Tuesday at the latest) In your subgroup think about 2 differences between the SCL and the teacher-centered learning (Traditional/ conventional) Student-Centered Learning Teacher-Centered Learning The focus is shared by both the students and their lecturer The focus is primarily on the lecturer Students may have some choice in the topics they cover The lecturer chooses the topics The lecturer models a concept or The lecturer talks and the students challenge, then invites the students to listen explain or demonstrate it back to the class The classroom is busy and filled with energy The classroom is typically quiet SCL VS teacher-Centered Learning: cont’d… Student-Centered Learning Teacher-Centered Learning The students interact with their lecturer and one another during the lesson What the lecturer knows about the subject takes priority Students work in pairs, in groups or alone depending on the activity Students work alone/independently The lecturer provides feedback or corrections when questions arise The teacher monitors and corrects student work as needed Students attempt to answer each The lecturer is solely responsible for other’s questions, using their lecturer answering students’ questions as an information resource or facilitator  It all depends on the lesson, the classroom setting, the teacher’s classroom management abilities and the students’ capacity to self-manage.  Some lecturers and students may find SCL too chaotic (‫)فوضوي‬, while others may find teacher-centered learning too passive (‫)سلبي‬. A healthy mix of teacher-centered and SCL methods may be the key to success. 1) O’Neill, G., Moore, S. and McMullin, B. (Eds.)
