Medical Education Unit Learning theories Prof.Dr.Ali Tareq PH.D Dermatology Diploma in Psychodermatology Diploma in psychotherapy (CBT,ACT,DBT) Learning outcomes At the end of the lecture , the participants will be able to : 1- Define learning 2-Describe the common learning theories. 3- Integrate these theories to your educational practice. Humanism Social constructivism Problem based learning Humanism Experiential learning Student centred curriculum Adult learning theories Classical conditioning التعلم الشرطي الجرس تحول الى دال , signifierاصبح له معنى ,من خالل االقتران مع الطعام الذي له معنى حقيقي غير مشروط Operant conditioning التعلم االجرائي الشرطي Social learning theory modelling) ( التعلم بالنمذجة النظرية المعرفية Cognitivism Behaviorism Stimulus Response Black box Reinforcement Cognitivism Stimulus Response Reinforcement Cognitivism ⚫ Information Processing looks at how information is retrieved and stored. ⚫ This theory focuses on how to store and retrieve information. ⚫ Learning is attained through rehearsal and consistent use of the information. ⚫ Retention strategies such as breaking down information and comparing the information to long term storage are great techniques. Cognitivism is a learning theory that emphasizes the role of mental processes in understanding and learning. It focuses on how learners acquire, process, and store information. Unlike behaviorism, which concentrates on observable behaviors, cognitivism considers the internal cognitive processes that influence learning. 1. Information Processing: Learning is viewed as a process of receiving, storing, and retrieving information. This involves attention, perception, and memory. 2. Active Engagement: Learners are encouraged to actively engage with the material, making connections and applying knowledge to new situations. 3. Schema Theory: Knowledge is organized into mental structures (schemas) that help individuals understand and interpret new information. 4. Metacognition: Awareness of one’s own learning processes. Learners can regulate their learning strategies and adapt based on their understanding. Application in Medical Education 1. Case-Based Learning: Engaging students in real-life scenarios helps them apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. This method encourages critical thinking and problem-solving. 2. Simulations: Using simulations for clinical skills training allows learners to practice in a realistic environment, facilitating better retention and understanding of complex concepts. 3. Concept Mapping: This tool helps students visualize relationships between different concepts, aiding in comprehension and retention. 4. Reflective Practice: Encouraging students to reflect on their learning experiences fosters metacognitive skills, allowing them to evaluate and improve their learning strategies. 5. Collaborative Learning: Working in groups fosters discussion and knowledge sharing, which helps students build a deeper understanding of medical concepts. Social Constructivism البنائية االجتماعية Social Constructivism views learning as a social process in which the learners construct knowledge based on their past experiences. The teacher only acts as a facilitator who encourages students to explore within a given framework. Learners may collaborate with others to organize their ideas and learn from each other to construct their own knowledge. Humanistic learning theory Students are autonomous adults ( Andragogy ) They are not children (Pedagogy) Experiential Learning: David Kolb Technology is a major part of the learning process and that our constant connectedness gives us opportunities to make choices about our learning. It also promotes group collaboration and discussion, allowing for different viewpoints and perspectives when it comes to decision- making, problem-solving, and making sense of information. Connectivism promotes learning that happens outside of an individual, such as through social media, online networks, blogs, or information databases. Applications : Thanks for listening Quiz A medical student is practicing a physical examination technique under the guidance of an instructor, who provides immediate feedback on their performance. Which learning theory is primarily being applied? A) Constructivism B) Behaviorism C) Cognitivism D) Connectivism A group of students is tasked with analyzing a complex case study and discussing their findings with their peers. This collaborative effort emphasizes which learning theory? A) Humanism B) Behaviorism C) Constructivism D) Cognitivism In an online course, students engage in discussions about recent medical research articles and share resources with one another. This approach reflects which learning theory? A) Cognitivism B) Connectivism C) Behaviorism D) Humanism A teacher uses flashcards and quizzes to help students memorize anatomical terms. This approach is best described by which learning theory? A) Constructivism B) Cognitivism C) Behaviorism D) Connectivism Learning may be defined as a ______ change in behavior that occurs as the result of experience. A. relatively permanent B. sensitization C. fixed D. continuous شكرا الصغائكم
