## State the main difference between asexual and sexual reproduction. | Asexual Reproduction | Sexual Reproduction | |---|---| | Only one parent plant is involved. | Both male and female plants are involved. | | Occurs in unisexual plants. | Occurs in bisexual plants. | | Occurs in lower plants. | Occurs in higher plants. | | Reproductive organs are not present. | Fully developed reproductive parts are present. | | Process like gamete formation or fertilization is not seen. | Fertilization of gametes gives rise to a zygote. | | No need of seeds. | Seeds are used to get new plants from a flower. | ## Explain what describe the different methods of asexual reproduction. Give examples. ### Reproduction through vegetative parts: - New plants can be produced through stem, leaves, roots, etc. - This is called vegetative propagation. - Examples: - Rose, Sugarcane - stem - Sweet potato, carrot - root - Bryophyllum - leaves ### Budding: - New organisms develop from the bulb-like projection from the parent body. - This is called budding. - Example: Yeast ### Fragmentation: - This is a form of asexual reproduction in which new organisms are formed from fragments of the parent body. - This is called fragmentation. - Example: Spirogyra ### Spore formation: - Many non-flowering plants like fungi and ferns reproduce through spores found in their body. - Examples: Fungus, moss and ferns. ## Explain what you understand by sexual reproduction. a) Sexual reproduction means involvement of two parents in the process of reproduction. It is found mainly in higher plants where male gametes and female gamete fuse to form a zygote. b) These zygotes develop into individuals which are not identical. c) In sexual reproduction gametes develop into both parents; parents survive after the process of reproduction.
