The bible: How does the bible have authority for Christians? 1) omnipotents 2) ex-deo 3) one morality by one god to be decent to one another 4) as his knowledge of the OT and how he changes it shows the authority of jesus biblical authors: Abraham, St Paul, Martin Luther, King James, Moses, King David (pslams), Early Church (edits), Matthew,Luke, John, Mark, Abraham 1) does the bible alone have the authority to command belief? 2) Do all texts in the bible command the same authority? 3) Does anyone have authority yo interpret the bible as they wish? 4) if the bible was written perfectly by the 'divine insparation', is it still perfect today? Inspiration - in a biblical sense. the doctrine that god in some sense influenced te authors and editors of the bible Revelation - this is god disclosing himself to humanity Conservatism: evangelical protestanism: everything in the bible is historically and scientifically true. Its the word of god on every page, god has written it in such a way to reach as many people as possible to be save as to evangelicals converting people means saving them. catholicism: catholics reject evangelical protestism arguing that the bible is an ever changing entity and instead they go off the autority jesus gave to the apostles and the aspostolic tradition. This level of authority comes from bishops and from the pope. Who have a direct word of god. neo orthodox: the bible clearly has scientific and historical errors these mask the word of god. The bible contains the word of god and that of salvation. ![[PXL_20241002_095605704 1.jpg]] The church: How do christians view the Authority of the church? 1) Evangelical protestants 2) that the bible is without error and that it is scientific and historically accurate 3) the creator 4) the bible is fascist, dafney hampson church authoirty: Esrablished through succession of the diciples Maintained through fear/ punishment and fear of the super natural teachings corruption etc POWER!!!! Jesus' Titles: Son of god/Son of man - How does this affect his authority for Christians? 1) Martin Luther and Jan Hus 2) It meant that princess in the holy roman empire didn't have the pay the pope or didn't really have to pay the empire as much 3) Predestination and the creator god 4) There is no free will lol 1) through the deciples like st paul 2) as paul got his authority from jesus 3) as the teachings of the church directly contradicted the bible and the priest being immoral 4) as completely true 5) every beliver can spread the world of god from the bible 6) st paul is very direct and and to the point Jesus' Authority and Christain responses: Is Jesus a role model for Christains? 1) His knowledge of the old testement 2) It means he command what is morally right and wrong, people more likely to apdopt his teachings 3) where jesus was spitting fr fr (the new covenant) 4) It sums up the 10 commandments Jesus' authority is God's authority because he is the Son of God Jesus has high authority as his authority is gods authority but less relatable Jesus' Authority is human authoirty because he is a son of God Low authority but more relatable Christology - the study of the authority of Jesus High - Divine (Mathew / John) Low - Human (Mark/Luke) E.g. Healing blindman -High the healing shows the divine authority of god -Low the healing shows how faith will save you and heal you, forgiveness/ acceptance Sermon on the mount: Matthew 5: Beatitudes: Who will be saved. Refers to the Old Covenat 'But i say to you' John 1: 1-3: Echos Gensis 1:1 Places Jesus at the centre of creation. Divine Eternal nature, Jesus shows Gods essence. It might be more practical to view Jesus' authority with low christologey as hes more relatable as a teacher which can be seen through him adapting to customs like being baptized. Impossible to relate to Jesus otherwise. Context plays an important role as without it you cannot see customs at the time and how Jesus going against said customs shows a greater level of authority even if he isn't divine. Keep the Jews safe from hositilities from each other, peace. a trade off for Jesus' authority would be that he is no longer a relatable human teacher that he is a humble carpenter here to launch a political revolution but instead placed by god to teach a specific view of morality and the world. Jesus' main teaching was of that being decent to each other in a community and helping each other, Christians do this today through works. 1) Son of man and son of god 2) Kurios - Lord, kurios - sir 3) it means that god has a personal relationship between you and himself 4) it means that god loves you and has a deep understanding and connection with god and understanding of him. Examine different christain perspectives on the authority of the church, refer to the refomation. st pual - 1 timothy - male leader of the church who uphold traditions. jesus - peter = rock - apastolic tradition catholicism: church has high authority -> apostiolic tradition teach + interpret the bible pope -> jesus , peter protestism: lower - leaders has less authority preisthood of all belivers bible has most authoirty luther. thesis - corruption, exile translated bible into german don't need church to teach Jesus has most authority: son of god incarnation -> trinity has knowledge of what god wants, ( he is god ) somthing else has more authority son of man/ role model : divine authority -> model more relatable bible: word of god (complete) god dictated (machines) writtent by humans (who are inspired) church: 2) apostolic tradition -> from jesus to teach for modern people Some christains belive that the authority of the church is greater than that of the bible. Most of these people are catholics and through the apostolic tradition created through peter, 'you are the rock in which i will build my church'. belive that the pope is the voice of god on earth and also can modify the catholic faith for more modern times. Which is reflected in the bible like the sermon on the mount. are chosen in a divine manner to teach people about the bible and an interpretation of the bible which is catholic doctrine. which means there is a high church authoity as for alot of catholics they cannot read a latin bible. Thus for catholicism the church has higher authority This differs to protestant views which split from the catholic church due to corruption and there view of the church being greater than the bible. To protestants the bible is the infallible word of god and by faith alone (sola fide) you can be saved. This is why Martin Luther then translates the bible from Latin into German. This allows protestant belivers to interpret the bible as they wish without a reliance on any priest to tell them how to think. This means that for protestants there is less church authority than catholics. so for protestants the bible has higher authority. Orthodox Christians are somwhere in the middle. The authority of the church is not as great as that in the catholic church, the patriachs still wielding large amounts of power. Furthermore there is still verbal confessions like that in catholicism. The bible holds just as significant if not even more power as similar to Protestantism it is translated into native languages like russian or greek. his means that for orthodox Christians the bible plays an important role as the same with the church. For orthodox christains the church and the bible have equal authority. boost 1) martin luther 2) no 3) cognative 4) History Preisthood of all belivers - a religous leader isn't required to understand god. luther and corruption sola scriptura - by scripture alone, the scripture is the sole ingallible source for christain faith and practice. st paul, salvation is found through scripture. wittgenstein would argue a theologer may understand how a beliver would understand the text and in essance have there own belief around the religous language, meaning it is not meaningless as they still participate in the language game to some degree.
