PHILIPPINE SOCIAL REALITIES AND SOCIAL WELFARE Prepared by: Rezil Alderite, RSW OBJECTIVES ◦ Develop a professional vocabulary for communication by mastering social work terminologies ◦ The students will be able to analyze the relationship between social work practice and social realities ◦ The students will be able to define and correctly use essential terminologies in social work, enhancing their ability to communicate effectively within the field. R.A 4373 It covers practically everything that men do for the good of society. It is also considered as an organized concerned of all people for all people. Walter Friedlander defines it as “the organized system of social services and institutions, designed to aid individuals and groups to attain satisfying standards of life and health. SOCIAL WELFARE It is a corporation or organization, private or governmental, that engages mainly and generally, or represents itself to engage in social welfare work, whether casework, group work, or community work, and obtains its finances, either totally or in part, from any agency or instrumentality of the government and/or from the community by direct or indirect solicitations and/or fund drives, and/or private endowment. SOCIAL AGENCY A practitioner who by accepted academic training and social work professional experience possesses the skill to achieve the objectives as defined and set by the social work profession, through the use of the basic methods and techniques of social work (casework, group work, and community organization) which are designed to enable individuals, groups and communities to meet their needs and to solve the problems of adjustment to a changing pattern of society and, through coordinated action, to improve economic and social conditions. SOCIAL WORKER SOCIAL REALITY Social reality refers to the shared beliefs, customs, norms, and values that shape the way individuals and groups perceive and interact with the world around them. It is a concept that acknowledges that much of what we consider "real" is constructed by society and culture. Social reality includes things like language, money, laws, and social institutions, which have no physical existence but have a significant impact on people's lives. It highlights the id that our perception of reality is influenced by the collective understanding and agreement of a society or community. Social Problem Reab and Zelznick (1961) define social problem as “a problem in human relationship which seriously threatens society or impedes the important aspirations of many people.’’ Mckee and Robertson (1975) state that a social problem exists when a significant number of people or number of significant people, perceived an undesirable difference between social Ideas and social realities, and believe that this difference can be eliminated by collective action. Poverty is a state or condition in which a person or community lacks the financial resources and essentials for a minimum standard of living. DIFFERENT TYPES OF POVERTY 1. Situational poverty - Situational poverty is defined as a lack of resources due to a particular event (i.e., a Death, chronic illness, divorce, etc.) that caused you to be economically unstable. 2. Generational poverty - Generational poverty is defined as being part of a family that has been living in poverty for more than two generations. 3. Absolute poverty Is defined as the inability of one to meet basic needs (food, shelter, etc.) due to a lack of financial resources. A person in absolute poverty may lack clean and safe drinking water, sufficient and nutritious food, and a safe place to live. 4. Relative poverty Where one may meet basic needs, in whole or in part, but their income level falls below the average in their area, impacting their quality of life. For example, they may have housing, food, and water, but they do not have the financial means or the time to socialize with other people or have any hobbies. 4. Urban poverty – It is the situation where people who live below a certain amount of income in the city and who have limited access to some social means. Is often marred by weak or hazardous living conditions related to sanitation, employment, and personal security. 6. Rural poverty – Refers to poverty in rural areas, including factors of rural society, rural economy, and political systems that give rise to the poverty found there. Often stems from limited access to markets, education, quality infrastructure, employment opportunities, health, and financial products. Collage-Making and Gallery Walk Form 5 groups of students in the class. Pre-assign each group with a specific vulnerable sector. Each group prepares and presents the collage presenting issues/problems/realities faced by the sector, and identifies the resource system, program or services appropriate to the sectoral issue/prob/reality.
