Sociology 1000C: Intro. to Sociology Dr. Trumino St. John's College: SJU Fall, 2024 Essay Final Directions: Answer all Questions/Roman numerals. Exam questions should be typed with double spacing. The analysis of each ARTICLE should be from 1-2 pages in length. Submit the exam with a COVER PAGE; your name should ONLY be on the COVER PAGE. Extra Credit: Each article analyzed beyond the required FOUR will count for Extra Credit, up to 10 points each. Make sure you label it, EXTRA CREDIT. Due Date: These Essays are due TUES. Dec 10th (But I will accept them without penalty on the day of your FINAL) For the Weds. Class they are due Weds. Dec. 11 (and accepted with out penalty on Weds. Dec 18) Final M-C/T-F Exam is on FRI. Dec 13 for the 12:15 class, TUES. Dec 17 for the 1:50 class, and WEDS, Dec. 18 for the Weds class I) Deviance and Crime (20 points) [Length: 1- 2 pages] Based on your reading of William Chambliss’s: “The Saints and the Roughnecks,” (Text, p.122 and Thinking Critically, p.207 a) describe the author’s principle ideas; cite data/research if appropriate, and b) of the theories of deviance/crime explained in the Henslin text, Chapter Six, which two theories best explain the deviance or crime. Explain your answer.. II) Social Inequality: Class (25 points) [Length: 1-2 pages] In examining inequality/social stratification, Marx and Weber looked at property, power, and/or prestige [Marx focused mainly on property, Weber on all three]. IV) Social Inequality: Sex/Gender (25 points) [Length: 1-2 pages] Choose ONE of the following articles: Coontz, p.401, “The Radical Idea of Marrying for Love,” Collins, p.409, “How Women Manage Careers and Caregiving,” or England, p. 461, “The Gender Revolution: Uneven and Stalled, a) Describe and analyze this article, and b) give your reaction to it. POINTERS ON WRITING THESE ESSAYS: 1. Most of your essays (i.e. length-wise) should address the “a” part of the question. 2. Begin your answer by citing the article and the author, e.g. “The article, ‘The Uses of The Underclass in America,’ by Herbert Gans, ….. “ 3. The pronoun “I” should not be used in the “a” part of these questions. Only third person pronouns should be used. I don’t want your opinion except on the “b” parts where you may use “I.” 4. Label parts properly, e.g. a) …….. b) …….. AND write the letters (parts) on the left hand margin (not in the middle of the answer/essay). 5. Your NAME should only be on the COVER page..
