New York’s Waterways New York’s waterways are considered an important natural resource – Water ways are used for travel and trade – Most of the state’s large cities were built near rivers New York’s longest river is the Hudson River – More than 300 miles long Regions of New York State New York State has 8 regions that are classified as cultural: – Metro NY and Long Island-We are in this region! – Lower Hudson Valley – Catskills – Capital District – Adirondacks – Central NY – Finger Lakes – Western NY Vocabulary Weather- Temperature and conditions in a certain place from day to day Climate-Pattern of weather in a certain place over many years Equator-An imaginary line around the middle of the Earth Elevation-Height above sea level Sea level-Surface of the sea Blizzard-Snowstorm with very strong winds Hurricane-Powerful storm with very strong winds and heavy rain New York Climate and Weather Weather changes from day to day, but climate remain the same Factors That Affect Location Temperature – Distance from the equator The closer to the equator the hotter the temperature The further from the equator the colder the temperature Extreme Weather Blizzards and hurricanes are types of extreme weather that can happen in NY Vocabulary Natural resource-Something found in nature that people could use. Renewable resources-Resources that can be replaced Nonrenewable resources-Resources that cannot be replaced Economy-Way people use resources to produce goods and services Conservation-Careful use of natural resources Pollution-Anything that dirties the air, soil, or water Natural Renewable Resources of NY New York’s Natural Renewable Resources include: – Soil – Minerals – Water – Forests With these resources we can grow and make things we need New York’s Natural Resources- Renewable Trees are an important natural resource – Three-fifths of NYS is forest woodland Trees and woodland are used for – Trees (lumber) can be cut down to build houses and furniture – Young trees are planted to replace trees that are cut down This makes trees and lumber a renewable resource. New York’s Natural Resources- Renewable continued Rich farmland – Dairy farms use the land to graze cattle that produce milk Cheese, butter, and yogurt are made from milk – Vegetables and fruits are grown on the rich farmland – Maple syrup is made from tree sap Renewable resources include: – Cattle – Grass – Soil New York’s Natural Resources-Renewable continued Water is another vital (important) resource – Rives and lakes Electricity is created using water power Non-Renewable Resources Once a renewable resource is used up, it is gone forever People mine (dig for) minerals – Iron – Salt – Gravel – Limestone Fossil fuels include – Oil – Natural gas Resources and the Economy The economy is affected by natural resources The type of natural resources we have affect the kind of economy we have – Determines the types of jobs we have Natural Resources and the Economy The location and availability of our natural resources affect the economy (jobs) in the area Using Resources Wisely Conservation: To reduce pollution, NY is turning to Renewable Natural Resources such as wind power, water power and solar power (energy from the sun)
