Lesson 1 How does Geography Define a Region? **[Vocabulary: ]** 1. **[Geography]**: The study of earth surface. 2. **[Features]**: important parts such as landform and bodies of water. 3. **[Latitude]**: Imaginary lines that form circles around the earth. 4. **[Longitude]**, imaginary lines that run around the earth vertically. 5. **[Regions]**: Is an area of land that has common features (landforms). Basic units of geography. 6. **[Temperature]**: IS a measurement of how hot or cold a place is. 7. **[Precipitation]**: Is rain or snow. 8. **[Renewable resources]**: Can be replenish or built up again. Ex. Wheat or lumber. 9. **[Nonrenewable resources]**: take millions of years to form and cannot replenished. Ex. Minerals, coal, oil. 10. **[Economy]**: system of producing and selling goods and services. **[Vocabulary related to landforms and bodies of water ]** 1. **[Canyon]**: A deep narrow valley with step sides. 2. **[Coast]**: the land along an ocean. 3. **[Volcano]**: an opening in earth's surface through which hot rock and ash are forced out. 4. **[Valley]**: An area of low lands between bills and mountains. 5. **[Peninsula]**: A body of land nearly surrounded by water. 6. **[Plains]**: A high flat area that rises steeply above the surrounding land. 7. **[River]**: a stream of water that flows across the land and empties into another body of water. **[Map of US Regions]**: The United States can be divides into five main regions made up of states with common features. - Northeast - Southeast - Midweast - Southweast - West **[Time zones]** 1. Timeline: A line that shows time and order in which events happened. 2. Decade: A period of ten years. 3. Century: A period of 100 years. 4. Millennium: A period for a thousand years. 5. A.C. After Jesus was born. 6. B.C Before Jesus was born. **[Landforms and the physical map of the US]** **[Landforms]** are physical features of the Earth's surface, such as mountain, canyons or plains. **[Waterways]**: are bodies of water that you can travel on such as rivers. Harbors, lakes and oceans. **[Climate and the factors that affect the climate]** **[Climate]** is the pattern of weather over a long period of time. A region climate **[depends on its geography]**. Places closer to the Equator are warmer. **[Elevation]** to affect the climate. Places in the mountains are cooler than places at lower elevation. **[Lakes and large bodies of water]** too affect the climate. **[Natural Resources]** Natural resources come from the environment. Include plants, animals, water and more. **[Economic Regions and Populations]** Economy helps people in every region earn a living. Banking and federal government play a role in the economy of the Northeast. In the southeast: agriculture and manufacturing Southweast: rich oil, silver and copper deposits. West: technology companies, international trade. One key resource tthat impacts the population is WATER. Because water is use for drinkink, agriculture, transportation and manufacturing. Large cities are localized near to big bodies of water.
