Piaget’s theory of cognitive development Adaptation – the process by which an individual adjusts to their environment through interaction with new experiences and information. E.g. A child might learn that some objects can float in water while others sink. Assimilation- the process of interpreting new information or experiences based on an individual’s existing mental structures. E.g. A child who knows what a dog looks like may see a cow for the first time and call it a dog because they are applying their existing schema (four-legged animals are dogs) Accommodation- the process of modifying one’s existing cognitive structures (schemas) to incorporate new information that doesn’t fit into existing knowledge. E.g. After realizing that a cow is not a dog, the child creates a new schema for "cow" and adjusts their understanding of four- legged animals to distinguish between different species Organization- the process of creating connections between different schemas, leading to more complex and coherent mental structures.. E.g. A child might organize their knowledge of animals into categories like "pets" and "farm animals" 2
