# Literary Devices and Techniques This document appears to be notes on literary devices and techniques. It's organized in a list format, with numbers corresponding to different concepts. **54. Syntax - Linguistics (how words are put together)** * 40. Realism - Literature that attempts to represent life. * 41. Naturalism - Extreme form of naturalism in which the author tries to show the relationship of a person to the environment (or surroundings - the author believes it is necessary to show the ugly side of relationships). **42. Antithesis** - A state of two things that are directly opposite to each other. * 43. Archetype - The original pattern/model of which all similar things are copies in literature (often used for characters, plots, themes that recur throughout literary history). **44. Ethos** - Source's credibility/authority. * **45. Logos** - Logic used to support a claim (facts/statistics). * **46. Pathos** - Emotional/motivational appeals (emotional language, numerous sensory details). * **47. Fable** - Brief, humorous literary form conveying a moral message. * **48. Aside** - Speech/remark made by a character on stage (only heard by the audience). * **49. Soliloquy** - Speech delivered by a character on stage in which the character reveals his/her nature, thoughts, and motives (not heard by other characters). * 50. Pun - Play on words (capitalizing on similarity of spelling and/or pronunciation between words having multiple meanings). * **51. Ballad** - Poem that records a story, generally dramatic, epic, and meant to be sung. * 52. Refrain - Consists of repetition of a line part of a line at the end of a stanza during frequent intervals. **Note:** Some entries appear incomplete or disorganized. The handwritten nature of the document might have contributed to this. Some definitions seem brief.
