Realism and Naturalism
- Realism: Literature that attempts to represent life
- Naturalism: Extreme form of naturalism where the author tries to show the relationship of a person to the environment, or surroundings if the author deems it necessary to show the ugly side of a relationship
Antithesis and Archetype
- Antithesis: State of two things that are directly opposite to each other
- Archetype: Original pattern/model of which all things of the same type are copies. Also used to refer to characters, plots, and themes that recur throughout the history of literature
Ethos, Logos, and Pathos
- Ethos: Source's credibility/authority
- Logos: Logic used to support a claim (facts/statistics)
- Pathos: Emotional/motivational appeals, uses emotional language, has numerous sensory details
Fable and Aside
- Fable: Brief, humorous literary form that conveys a moral message
- Aside: Speech/remark made by a character on stage, only heard by the audience
Soliloquy and Pun
- Soliloquy: Speech delivered by a character on stage, in which the character reveals his/her nature, thoughts, and motives (not heard by other characters)
- Pun: Play on words, capitalization on similarity in words and/or pronunciation
Ballad
- Ballad: Poem that recounts a story, generally dramatic, and is sung.
