CLASS SESSION III ( TAKING ACTION ) OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this session, the students will be able to: 1. Identify the three emergency action steps and describe role in each step 2. Enumerate basic questions when conducting an interview 3. Perform head-to-toe assessment EMERGENCY ACTION STEPS 1. CHECK the 3. CARE scene 2. CALL for the and 9999 person the person 1. CHECK qBefore you can help an injured or ill person, make sure that the scene is safe for you and any bystanders. Answer these questions: 1. Is it safe? 2.Is immediate danger involved 3.What happened? 4.How many people are involved 5.Is anyone else available 6.What is wrong? 2. CALL ü Calling 9999 for help often is the most important action to help the injured or ill person. ü It will send emergency medical help on its way as fast as possible. ü Call should be made quickly and return to the person. CONDITIONS REQUIRING EMERGENCY CARE 1. Unconsciousness, Drowsiness, Confusion 2. Breathing problems 3. Chest pain radiating to 4. Persistent 5. Severe external shoulder, abdominal pain or bleeding arm, neck pressure and jaw 6. Vomiting blood 8. Suspected 7. Severe burns or passing blood poisoning 10. Suspected or 11. Painful, swollen, 9. CARE Ø Check for life-threatening conditions and give necessary care GENERAL GUIDELINES: § Do not further harm § Monitor the person’s breathing and consciousness § Help the person rest in a comfortable position § Keep the person from getting chilled or overheated § Reassure the person § Give any specific care as needed CONDUCTING INTERVIEW vAsk person and bystanders simple questions to learn more about what happened: ü What is your name? ü What happened? ü Do you feel pain or discomfort anywhere? ü Do you have any allergies? ü Do you have any medical conditions or are you taking any medication? vTAKE NOTE: Ø Keep interview brief Ø Identify yourself and get person’s consent before giving care PERFORMING HEAD TO TOE ASSESSMENT Do not move any areas where Check the person’s head by there is pain or discomfort, or if examining the scalp, face, you suspect a head, neck or ears, mouth and nose spinal injury Look for cuts, bruises, bumps or Watch for changes in depressions.
