GROUP 1 PRESENTATION SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY Exploring the Interdisciplinary Dynamics of Science, Technology, and Society Lars Peeters Teddy Yu Chidi Eze LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this presentation, students should be able to define the interconnected concepts of science, technology, and society. Students will also examine the relationship between these three fields and understand how they influence one another. Finally, the scope of the interdisciplinary field of STS will be clearly explained. KEY CONCEPTS Science: Science comes from the Latin word scientia, meaning “knowledge”. It refers to a systematic and methodical activity of building and organizing knowledge about how the universe behaves through observation, experimentation, or both. Technology: Technology is the application of scientific knowledge, laws, and principles to produce services, materials, tools, and machines aimed at solving real-world problems. It comes from the Greek root word techne, meaning “art, skill or cunning of hand”. Society: Groups of people sharing cultural, social, and political systems that influence and are influenced by science and technology. WHY STUDY STS? Understanding the relationship between science, technology, and society helps us see how cultural values, political systems, and social structures shape technological advancements. This field also allows us to evaluate the ethical and social implications of new technologies and find ways to use them to address global challenges. Studying STS provides the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about the role of science and technology in creating a sustainable and equitable future. IMPACT OF STS 1. Healthcare: Technological advancements have revolutionized healthcare by introducing new medical treatments, life-saving devices, and improved diagnostic tools. 2. Communication: The development of the Internet and mobile devices has transformed the way people connect, share information, and collaborate across the globe. 3. Economy: Science and technology drive economic growth by creating new industries, jobs, and opportunities for innovation. 4. Education: Technology has made education more accessible and flexible through online courses, digital resources, and interactive learning platforms. 5. Environment: Advances in renewable energy and green technology offer solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change and promote sustainability. CONCLUSION The study of science, technology, and society provides us with the tools to understand and shape the complex relationships between these fields. By exploring how scientific knowledge and technological innovations impact society, we can contribute to informed decisions that ensure a positive and sustainable future for all. Let us remember that science and technology must always serve the greater good of society. LESSON 2: CRADLES OF EARLY SCIENCE A Summary of Science and Technology Development in Early Civilizations INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. Identify the documented antecedents of science and technology across time. 2. Trace scientific revolutions in Mesoamerica, Asia, and Africa. 3. Explain how scientific and technological inventions shaped and were shaped by different societies. INTRODUCTION TO EARLY SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Science and technology have played a vital role in shaping civilizations. Ancient societies developed innovative solutions to improve daily life. This presentation explores how early civilizations in Mesoamerica, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa contributed to scientific progress. DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN MESOAMERICA The term “Mesoamerica” introduced by anthropologist Paul Kirchhoff, refers to the region comprising modern-day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and parts of Central America. These cultures shared similar traditions and advancements. Celebration of Mesoamerican Achievements and Advances MAYAN CIVILIZATION The Mayans, native to Mesoamerica since 2000 BCE, evolved from nomadic farmers into a hierarchical society ruled by nobles and kings. Their peak, known as the Classic Period (250-900 CE), saw the rise of great cities like Chichen Itza and Uxmal. By 900 CE, many cities were abandoned for unknown reasons. Today, millions of Mayans still speak more than 30 Mayan languages, reflecting their enduring cultural legacy. MAYAN DISCOVERIES / TECHNOLOGIES Mayan Tzolkin calendar Concept of Zero Developed the Tzolkin (260- Pioneered the use of zero day) and Haab (365-day) in their base-20 numerical calendars based on celestial system, influencing modern observations. mathematics. MAYAN DISCOVERIES / TECHNOLOGIES Astronomy Mayan Writing System Accurately predicted Created a sophisticated eclipses and planetary hieroglyphic writing system movements based on used to record history, myths, detailed celestial studies. and laws. MAYAN DISCOVERIES / TECHNOLOGIES Mayan Weaving Made looms to weave cloth on. INCAN DISCOVERIES / TECHNOLOGIES Incan Road System Quipu (Knotted Records) Built a 40,000 km road Used knotted strings for network with hanging accounting, census data, and bridges, connecting the administration. empire. Conclusion The discoveries and technologies of ancient civilizations such as the Mayans, Incans, Aztecs, and Chinese highlight their incredible ingenuity and profound understanding of the world around them. From advanced architecture and road systems to astronomy and agriculture, their contributions laid the foundation for modern science, engineering, and culture. These innovations remind us of the creativity and determination of humanity and continue to inspire advancements in the present day. THANK YOU
