UNIVERSITY OF THE CORDILLERAS GOV. PACK ROAD, BAGUIO CITY SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY **Definitions of Science** 1\. Science as knowledge \-\-- Latin word scientia \"knowledge\" \-\-- Latin word sciens --- present participle of scire \"to know\" Wisdom -- application if knowledge 2\. Science is organized knowledge \-\-- is a systematized body of knowledge base on facts as a result of observation and experimentation used to predict future events. \-\-- German word wissenchaft\"organized knowledge\" 3\. Albert Einstein description \-\-- science is an attempt to make the chaotic diversity of our sense-experience correspond to a logically uniform system of thought. 4\. Science seeks truth \-\-- science serves as an instrument in the search for truth. By carrying out experiments with instruments of progressively greater accuracy or by repeating experiments, one arrives closer to the truth. However, since there are limits to scientific understanding, one can never determine exactly or absolutely the truth. **TWO CATEGORIES OF SCIENCE** I. Natural Science - Knowledge - Information - Surroundings 3 DIVISIONS: A. Biological Science/Life Science - Living things and process of life Branches of biological Science 1\. Zoology \-\-- animals 2\. Botany \-\-- plants 3\. Anatomy \-\-- dissection 4\. Physiology \-\-- functions 5\. Pathology \-\-- diseases 6\. Cytology \-\-- cells 7\. Histology\-\-- tissues 8\. Physical Science \- physical nature of matter and energy Branches of physical Science 1\. Physics \-\-- deals with the interactions of energy and matter, such concepts as the laws of motion and the effects of motion on matter -Study of natural forces and energy \- We study physics to understand the motions of the earth, the moon and other celestial bodies. 2\. Chemistry \-\-- composition, structure, properties of matter and the changes it undergoes and the energy resulting from these changes. \- It views the world in terms of particles: atoms, molecules, elements, compounds, and mixtures. \- Everything on the Earth and in the universe is composed of matter. We need to understand matter to understand the stuff of which the earth is made. C. Earth Science - Earth structure, and nature of universe Branches of Earth Science 1\. Astronomy \-\-- heavenly bodies or celestial bodies 2\. Geology \-\-- earth -- geo "earth" 3\. Meteorology \-\-- earth's atmosphere -- meteoron "high in the sky" 4\. Geography \-\-- earth's surface - geo "earth" 5\. Paleontology \-\-- fossils \-- palatox "ancient" \-- ont \"being\" II\.
