MODULE 1: Introduction to EARTH & LIFE by: CANDICE MARIE D. SCIENCEPINEDA Core Subject Description: This learning area is designed to provide a general background for the understanding of Earth Science and Biology. It presents the history of the Earth through geologic time. It discusses the Earth’s structure, composition, and processes. Issues, concerns, and problems pertaining to natural hazards are also included. It also deals with the basic principles and processes in the study of biology. It covers life processes and interactions at the cellular, organism, population, and ecosystem levels. What is EARTH & LIFE SCIENCE? Earth and Life Science is a subject that explores the fundamental concepts related to both the physical aspects of our planet (Earth Science) and the biological aspects of living organisms (Life Science). It is typically taught at the high school level and is designed to give students a broad understanding of the natural world. EARTH SCIENCE: GEOLOGY The study of the Earth's structure, materials, and processes, including rocks, minerals, and plate tectonics. EARTH SCIENCE: HYDROLOGY/ OCEANOGRAPHY The study of the oceans, including marine life, ocean currents, and the ocean's role in Earth's climate. EARTH SCIENCE: METEOROLOG Y The study of weather and climate, including the atmosphere and the processes that govern weather patterns. EARTH SCIENCE: ASTRONOM Y The study of the universe beyond Earth, including stars, planets, and galaxies. LIFE SCIENCE: BIOLOGY The study of living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, evolution, and interactions with their environment. LIFE ECOLOGY SCIENCE: The study of how organisms interact with each other and their environment, including ecosystems and biodiversity. LIFE SCIENCE: GENETICS The study of heredity and variation in organisms, including DNA, genes, and inheritance. LIFE SCIENCE: EVOLUTION The study of how species change over time through natural selection and other processes. CHAPTER 1: UNIVERSE AND SOLAR SYSTEM The learners demonstrate an understanding of the formation of the universe and the solar system CHAPTER 2: EARTH AND EARTH SYSTEMS The learners demonstrate an understanding of the subsystems (geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere) that make up the Earth; Earth’s internal structure. CHAPTER 3: MINERALS AND ROCKS The learners demonstrate an understanding of the three main categories of rocks; the origin and environment of formation of common minerals and rocks CHAPTER EXOGENIC & 4: ENDOGENIC The learners demonstrate an PROCESSES understanding of the endogenic and exogenic processes. CHAPTER 5: DEFORMATION OF THE CRUST The learners demonstrate an understanding of the plate tectonics CHAPTER 6: HISTORY OF THE EARTH The learners demonstrate an understanding of how the planet Earth evolved in the last 4.6 billion years CHAPTER 7: GEOLOGIC PROCESSES AND HAZARDS The learners demonstrate an understanding of the different hazards caused by geological processes (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and landslides) CHAPTER 8: HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL PHENOMENA & HAZARDS The learners demonstrate an understanding of the different hazards caused by hydrometeorological phenomena (tropical cyclones, monsoons, floods, and tornadoes or ipo-ipo) CHAPTER 9: MARINE & COASTAL PROCESSES & THEIR EFFECTS The learners demonstrate an understanding of the different hazards caused by coastal processes (waves, tides, sea-level changes, crustal movement, and storm surges) CHAPTER 10: INTRODUCTION TO LIFE SCIENCEThe learners demonstrate an understanding of: (1) the historical development of the concept of life, (2) the origin of the first life forms, and (3) unifying themes in the study of life CHAPTER BIOENERGETICS 11: The learners demonstrate an understanding of: (1) the cell as the basic unit of life, (2)how photosynthetic organisms capture light energy to form sugar molecules, and (3)how organisms obtain and utilize energy. CHAPTER PERPETUATION OF 12: LIFE The learners demonstrate an understanding of: (1) plant and animal reproduction, (2)how genes work, and (3) how genetic engineering is used to produce novel products CHAPTER 13: HOW PLANTS SURVIVE The learners demonstrate an understanding of: (1) plant form and function, and (2) plant growth and development. CHAPTER 14: THE PROCESS OF The learners demonstrate an understanding of: (1) the evidence for evolution, and (2) the origin and extinction of species. CHAPTER 15: INTERACTION AND INTERDEPENDENCE The learners demonstrate an understanding of: (1) the principles of the ecosystem, (2) biotic potential and environmental resistance, (3) terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, (4) how human activities affect the natural ecosystem.
