This also sets the trigger - Wash your hands and put on gloves - Have the person wash their hands (this cleans any residual sugar which may be on the skin and warm water wash assists blood flow in fingers) - Choose to prick the SIDE of the finger NOT the end. Nerve endings in the end of the finger cause pain. - Apply device tightly against the skin on side of the finger - Push blue trigger - Apply drop of blood to meter strip - Wait for appropriate time and machine will give a reading - If bleeding does not occur, ask client to place hands in warm water to aid blood flow - Dispose by pressing blue end of device while holding needle end over a sharps disposal container -- NEVER leave needle in the device - Wipe away excess blood on finger. Cover if necessary - Record result - A blood glucose level below 4mmol/l is referred to as being hypoglycaemic. - A blood glucose level above 4mmol/l is referred to as being hyperglycaemic.\_\_ **[Explain why you should not use alcohol wipes when performing a finger prick test to measure blood glucose levels]** - Alcohol wipes should not be used when performing a finger prick test to measure blood glucose levels because alcohol can interfere with the accuracy of the test. **Remember that your clinical placements will have policies and procedures that guide you on treatment of hypo's. Please ensure that you read policies and procedures folder on all clinical placements.** - **Hypoglycaemia is a condition characterised by low blood sugar levels, while hyperglycaemia is a condition characterised by high blood sugar levels.**
