IN A FIT OF ANGER, SHE RETREATED INTO A CELESTIAL CAVE, PLUNGING THE WORLD INTO DARKNESS. THE OTHER GODS, ALARMED BY THE ABSENCE OF LIGHT, DEVISED A PLAN TO LURE AMATERASU OUT. THEY GATHERED OUTSIDE THE CAVE, CREATING A BOISTEROUS SPECTACLE WITH LOUD NOISES AND A RAUCOUS DANCE PERFORMANCE. INTRIGUED BY THE COMMOTION, AMATERASU PEEKED OUT OF THE CAVE. The Shinto faith is evident in the story "When the Sun Goddess Hid in the Cave of Heaven" through its reverence for kami (deities), rituals, and connection to nature. The myth centers on Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess, whose light sustains life, and Susanoo, the Storm God, symbolizing Shinto's focus on natural harmony. The deities’ communal efforts to lure Amaterasu from the cave, using rituals like music, dance, and sacred objects (such as the Yata-no-Kagami, or Sacred Mirror), reflect Shinto practices that honor and appease kami.
