# First Transition Series ## Scandium (Sc) **Properties:** * Scandium is found in a very small amount spread over a large area in the earth's crust. * It is very reactive, capable of reacting with water (most reactive in the first transition series). **Uses:** * Scandium is added to mercury vapor lamps used in TV photography at night, to produce high-quality light. * It's used in the manufacture of MiG fighter jets, as adding a small amount of scandium to aluminum creates an alloy characterized by its lightness and high hardness. ## Titanium (Ti) **Properties:** * Titanium is a strong, rigid element, though less dense than steel. * It maintains its durability at high temperatures. * It is used in dental implants and artificial joints because of its rigidity. The body doesn't reject it, and it doesn't cause any poisoning. (It's an inert substance). **Uses:** * Titanium alloys with aluminum are used in the manufacture of aircraft and space shuttles, because titanium maintains its durability at high temperatures, despite aluminum's hardness decreasing when used on its own. * Titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) is used in sun protection cosmetics, as its minute nanoparticles prevent the effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays on the skin. **Note:** The document shows a periodic table segment and a table of element weight percentages in the Earth's crust. There are also images of scandium, a space shuttle and dental implants.
