# First Transition Series ## Scandium (Sc) **Properties:** * Scandium is found in a very small amount spread over a large area in the earth's crust. * It is very reactive, capable of reacting with water (most reactive in the first transition series). **Uses:** * Scandium is added to mercury vapor lamps used in TV photography at night, to produce high-quality light. * It's used in the manufacture of MiG fighter jets, as adding a small amount of scandium to aluminum creates an alloy characterized by its lightness and high hardness. ## Titanium (Ti) **Properties:** * Titanium is a strong, rigid element, though less dense than steel. * It maintains its durability at high temperatures. * It is used in dental implants and artificial joints because of its rigidity. The body doesn't reject it, and it doesn't cause any poisoning.
