### Tissues #### Chp. 4 - Tissues are a group of cells similar in structure working together to perform a common function. - Types of Tissues: - Epithelial (Epithelium) - Nervous - Connective - Muscle #### Epithelial Tissue - Histology is the study of tissue. - Are tightly packed cells that are connected by certain junctions (tight, gap, desmosome). - This tissue provides protection from the outside. - Covers exposed surfaces (like skin). - Lines internal passageways. Eretes into ducts. - Forms glands: - Endocrine gland: Secretes into blood. - Have a free surface known as apical. - Apical (Free Surface) - Always on top and is facing the air or free surface. - Goblet Cell- a unicellular gland for secretion. - Keratinized- dead cells filled with protein keratin to help against abrasion (like skin). - Basal Surface - Is connected to the basement membrane. - The basement membrane is made of collagen and glycoprotein.
