It is all too easy for us to fall prey to our flesh and to walk in arrogance. Run-on sentences are two sentences (or independent clauses) which are incorrectly combined. Run-on sentences are result of two independent clauses that were combined by a comma or were combined without a coordinating conjunction or a punctuation to separate the two.  Example Incorrect: We are saving for the souvenirs, I should not buy anything before the trip. Correct: We are saving for the souvenirs. I should not buy anything before the trip. If you were to use a comma to link two independent clauses, it would be a comma splice. Think of commas as being to weak to hold main clauses together without the help of a conjunction.  There are different ways to correct a run-on sentence. 1. Join the independent clauses with a semicolon (as a substitute for a coordinating conjunction).  There are different ways to correct a run-on sentence. Make sure that both sentences are of equal logical and grammatical weight in the sense that both clauses have a subject, a verb, and a complete thought.  Example Incorrect: My teacher read my essay she said it was excellent. Insert a coordinating conjunction between the two sentences (independent clauses). Example Incorrect: I am a woman, I am a machine operator. Convert one of the sentences to a dependent clause by adding a subordinating conjunction and then combine the two clauses forming a complex sentence.  Example Incorrect: Pedro travelled with his family the entire weekend, he still showed up at work on Monday. Correct: Although Pedro travelled with his family the entire weekend, he still showed up at work on  Example Incorrect: Maria held her chest as she was opening her letter from the university her heart was beating loudly.
