Module 1 RPH HISTORY Etymology -In ancient Greece, the word "history" originated from the Greek term "historia," meaning "Inquiry" or "knowledge acquired by investigation." The Greeks were one of the first civilizations to develop a systematic approach to recording and studying the past, giving rise to the field of historiography. -During the Roman Empire, the Latin term "historia" was used to refer to both "history" and "story." Roman historians, such as Livy and Tacitus, played a crucial role in shaping the historical narrative and documenting the events and deeds of their time. Western Definition -In European languages, history is "story." The words historia (Spanish), histoire (French), and gesichte (German) all mean the same thing - story. From this Western point of view, history is seen as the study or record of past events. It is, therefore, a story of the past. -In the Western context, "history" is a multifaceted term that refers to the study, recording, and interpretation of past events, with an emphasis on chronological order, narrative construction, and critical analysis. It encompasses both the events themselves and the methods used to understand and convey them. Published Definition -Encyclopedia Brittanica defined history as "the discipline that studies the chronological order of events (as affecting a nation or people), based on critical examination of source materials and usually presenting an explanation of their causes. -According to Calderon and Gonzales, the word "history" means the search for knowledge and truth, it is a search to find out. "History is any integrated narrative or description of past events or facts written in a spirit of critical inquiry for the whole truth" (Calderon & Gonzales 1993 citing Good and Scates, 1972) NATURE OF HISTORY History is concerned with man in time.
