LESSON 1&2: RECREATION AND IT’S TYPE RECREATION used in the English language first in the late 14th century, in the sense of "refreshment or curing of a sick person". It is derived from the Latin “re” which means "again”, and “create” which means “to create”. PLAY, which is usually the term for children's recreational activity. - derived from the Anglo-Saxon “plega”, meaning “a game, sport, skirmish, fight or battle”. This is related to the Latin "plaga” which means “a blow, stroke, or thrust”. PHYSICAL RECREATIONAL are activities such as playing basketball or volleyball with friends, help to keep a person's body in shape and serve to initiate close bonds between and among like-minded individuals. LEISURE here means being free from prior commitments to physiologic or social needs LEISURE SI DEFINED BASED ON FIVE VIEWS: 1. AS A SYMBOL OF SOCIAL CLASS The view of leisure as closely related to social class stemmed from the work of Thorstein Veblen, a leading American sociologist of the late 19th century. Veblen showed how, throughout history, ruling classes emerged from those who identified themselves sharply through the possession and use of leisure. 2. AS AN UNOBLIGATED TIME The most common view of leisure regards it as unobligated or discretionary time. Discretionary time is time that is not used for work obligations and personal maintenance. 3. Also known as “Dune Bashing”, DESERT SAFARI has become one of the prime desert recreational activities around the world, especially in the heart of the Middle East LESSON 3:BENEFITS OF RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES PERSONAL BENEFITS OF RECREATION 1. Physical recreation and fitness contributes to a full and meaningful life. 2. Regular physical activity is one of the very best methods of health assurance for individuals. 3. Relaxation, rest and revitalization through the opportunity of leisure are essential to stress management. 4. Meaningful leisure activity is an essential source of self-esteem and positive self-image. 5. Leisure provides the opportunity to lead balanced lives, achieve our full potential and gain life satisfaction. SOCIAL BENEFITS OF RECREATION 1.Community recreation promotes ethnic and cultural harmony. 2. Leisure provides leadership opportunities that build strong communities 3. Community recreation reduces alienation, loneliness and anti-social behaviours. 4. Engaging in recreation together builds strong families, the foundation of a stronger society. Leisure provides opportunities for community involvement, and shared management and leisure services. LESSON 4 :WATER-BASED LEISURE AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES RECREATIONAL WATER ACTIVITIES 1. AQUATIC RECREATION - is a form of leisure that uses water in any way 2. COMPETITIVE WATER - sports can either be Individual-Based or Team-Based. 3. ROWING is a sport in which athletes compete in boats on rivers, lakes, or the ocean, 4. SYNCHRONIZED DIVING -, where 2 divers must perform opposite diving forms, 5. SAILING - To more specific, travelling over water in a vessel or vehicle that has sails 6. SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING - performing elegant synchronized moves in the water with music 7. KAYAKING - this water sport, where a small boat called kayak is used to move 8. CANOEING is done in a small boat called canoe which is pointed at both ends. 9. POWER BOATING speeds high enough to get your adrenaline pumping and enjoy the thrills 10. YACHTING is sailing or boating on a vessel called yacht. 11. INDIVIDUAL WATER SPORTS 12. SWIMMING - this is supposedly the most popular water sports 13. SURFING - is riding a surfboard on a forward face of a wave, 14. WINDSURFING the radical technique of surfing, combined with sailing know-how and skill, 15. JET SKIING is basically racing over a body of water on a one-man watercraft machine. 16. WAKEBOARDING imagine surfing while being towed along by a high – speed boat. 17. WATER SKIING – is basically skiing on the water. An individual uses 2 skis or a single ski to skim 18. TRIATHLON – is a type of race that popularly involves swimming, cycling, and running 19. KITE SURFING – uses a small surfboard or wake board which is pulled by a kite. 20. SKIM BOARDING – Again a board sport, but with a twist. 21. BODY BOARDING – The surfer’s rides a body board on a wave that carries him towards 22. CLIFF DIVING – is one form wherein divers jump off the cliffs or rocks 23. FISHING (ANGLING) 24. RECREATIONAL WATER SPORTS are typically sports activities that are performed on or in the water solely for recreational purposes. 25. SNORKELING – is swimming on the surface or through water with a diving mask, fins, 26. SPEARFISHING – is an ancient method of fishing using sharpened sticks to catch fish. 27. UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY – with a waterproof camera and appropriate light setup. 28. WATER AEROBICS – is a form of exercise where aerobics are performed in shallow water. 29. FREE DIVING – long spells under water without the use of any diving equipment. 30. PARASAILING – a parachute that is specially designed to be towed behind a boat. 31. SCUBA DIVING – is type of underwater diving using a scuba set – that generally consists of an AIR HOSE, MOuthpiece, regulator, harness, back plate, and an air-tank – 32. BAREFOOT SKIING – Water skiing using just your feet is barefoot skiing. LESSON 5&6: TEAM BUILDING AND WATER AEROBICS TEAM BUILDING - is one of the most widely used group-development activities in organizations. BONDING - is important as it can create that sense of looking out for each other and helps CONFIDENCE - applies to every single task that someone undertakes and, having it, will produce significant gains in results.
